Soccer Buccaneers drop a 4-1 road decision to Morgantown

MORGANTOWN – Despite losing a 4-1 contest to the homestanding Morgantown Mohigans Thursday evening, Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato was pleased with how his Buccaneer soccer team played.

“The score isn't indicative on how well we played tonight,” remarked Donato. “Compared to Tuesday, (a 2-1 road loss to Robert C. Byrd), we moved the ball a lot better and we had much better intent on our passes and play. Our runs and movements into open space were improved. Defensively we did well stepping hard to challenges and looking to find connecting passes going forward. Obviously, there are a lot of things we still need to improve on, like fouls in dangerous areas of the field. They are starting to play better together as we work through some lineup adjustments and get rotations figured out.”

Morgantown built a 1-0 lead in the first half when Bernardo Pereira cleaned up a loose ball and took in for the goal in the 22nd minute.

A pair of goals by Morgantown in a minute’s time sealed the fate of the Bucs in the second half.

In the 59th minute, Morgantown’s Caden Carpenter drilled a hard shot to the back post for an unassisted goal and Braxton Johnson scored just a minute later when he dribbled across the top of the penalty area and put in a shot to the back post for an unassisted goal giving the Mohigans a 3-0 lead.

The Bucs got on the board in the 61st minute when Ryan Hurst scored on a penalty kick.

Morgantown’s Vivek Sriram gave the Mohigans some breathing room in the 69th minute when Azain Ugaily played a pass to him in the middle of the field and he scored with a shot to the near post.

The Bucs were outshot by an 8-7 margin but led in corner kicks by a 6-1 margin.

The Bucs were guilty of six fouls while the Mohigans were called for five.

Dalton Auvil turned away four shots for the Bucs in net while Morgantown keeper Carter Cave made six saves.

Morgantown, which had their season halted for several weeks because of the state’s COVID-19 map, improved to 4-1-1 overall.

The Bucs dropped to 6-5-1 on the season as the loss was their third in a row.

They were slated to host Hurricane today, but that game was canceled because of COVID-19 concerns as the county moved into orange territory.

If the state map allows, the Bucs are scheduled to visit Philip Barbour Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and Bridgeport Thursday at 6 p.m. for a pair of Big 10 Conference contests.
