TENNERTON – If you enjoy the game of soccer, then you probably enjoyed watching the Buckhannon-Upshur – Fairmont Senior contest Tuesday evening at Ted Crites Alumni Field at Tom Hasbrouck Stadium.
Unfortunately, though if you were a Buccaneer fan, you probably were quite as pleased with the final result.
With a game between two of the top teams in the state, the Polar Bears eked out a 1-0 win over the Buccaneers with a late second-half goal.
That goal came in the 70th minute off the foot of Jonas Branch who dribbled to the center and split a pair of B-U defenders and scored with a shot to the far post.
“That's about as good of a high school soccer game you will see in the state,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “Fairmont Senior is probably the favorite to repeat as AA/A champions so we knew he had quite a challenge, but with the adjustments we made based on Saturday and a great practice on Monday we were more than ready. I couldn't have asked for a better effort from our team tonight, particularly in the second half.”
The Bucs were outshot by a 10-4 margin but owned a 4-2 lead in corner kicks.
Both teams were guilty of five fouls.
B-U keeper Dalton Auvil made nine saves for the Bucs while Fairmont Senior keeper Eli Day turned away four shots.
The win improved Fairmont Senior to 8-1 on the season.
The Bucs dropped to 5-2-1 on the season.
They will return to action today when they host East Fairmont at 5:30 p.m. and then travel to Greenbrier East Saturday for a new game on the schedule at noon.
