Soccer Buccaneers can’t overcome first-half deficit; fall to Mussselman in non-conference contest, 3-2

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Bucs couldn’t overcome a three-goal first half by the Musselman Appleman here Saturday afternoon dropping a 3-2 non-conference contest.

The Appleman are coached by former West Virginia Wesleyan assistant coach and former Buckhannon resident Keith Moran.

“It’s great to get this game back on the schedule,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “I've known coach Moran for years from his time here in Buckhannon so when he took over at Musselman we got this game back on the schedule building from our days playing in Region II.”

Conal Matthews gave Musselman a 1-0 in the ninth minute with an unassisted goal on a hard shot from the left side of the penalty area.

The Bucs tied the game in the 28th minute when Ryan Hurst played a through ball from Lamar Hurst and scored with a shot to the far post.

Musselman scored two goals within a three-minute span late in the first half.

Joseph Reyes scored an unassisted goal with a shot to the near post through Buckhannon-Upshur keeper Logan Kelley in the 33rd minute.

Musselman’s Ben Edwards followed that with a shot in the middle of the goal after a poor defensive clear by the Bucs to make it a 3-1 contest.

The score remained 3-1 at the break.

Hurst tallied his second goal of the game in the 50th minute with a hard shot on a rebound to the far post to make it a 3-2 contest.

The Bucs though were never able to get the game-tying goal in the final 30 minutes of action.

“The first half we did a poor job of executing our game plan,” said Donato. “We knew going in Musselman's plan of attack and just got caught off guard the first 40 minutes. Our team did a great job adjusting in the second half but couldn't convert on the chances we got, particularly on corners where we had several chances.”

The Bucs owned an 8-1 margin in corner kicks while Musselman had a 5-3 lead in shots-on-goal.

The Bucs were guilty of nine fouls while Musselman was called for eight.

Kelley made two saves in net for the Bucs while Tyler Waddell made two saves for Musselman.

The loss dropped the Bucs to 6-3 overall.

They will return to the pitch Tuesday at Grafton for a Big 10 Conference clash at 8 p.m.
