Soccer Buccaneers blank Grafton; improve record to 7-3 on the season

GRAFTON – Buckhannon-Upshur’s Ryan Hurst and Lane Tenney provided the offense and the defense completely stymied the Grafton attack as the Buccaneers recorded a 5-0 Big 10 Conference road win Tuesday night.

It was the sixth shutout of the year for B-U keeper Logan Kelley and the defense as they didn’t allow Grafton a shot-on-goal or a corner kick during the game.

“This was a great result and a reward for a great day of practice on Monday,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “We challenged a lot of the players, based on tendencies we've been noticing, just little things that needed corrected or cleaned up that would help speed up our rate of play. The team definitely stepped up to those challenges. Even though we've still got a lot of fine tuning to do, this got us back on track after the Musselman loss last Saturday.”

Tenney put the Bucs on the board in the fourth minute when he hit a corner kick and it bent in with Grafton keeper Alec Corriera misplaying it and knocking it in to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Hurst got into the scoring act for the Bucs in the 22nd minute when he played a through ball from Tyler Sandreth and scored with a shot to the low far post giving the Bucs a 2-0 advantage.

Hurst scored again 11 minutes later playing another through ball, this one from Haven Tyson, with a shot to the far post.

The Bucs built their lead to 4-0 when Tenney scored his second goal of the game late in the first half when Dawson Carpenter dropped off a pass outside the penalty area and he finished with a hard shot to the back post 20 yards out.

The lone goal of the second half belonged to Hurst when he controlled a through ball from Sandreth and scored with a shot to the far post in the 55th minute.

It was Sandreth’s second assist of the game.

The Bucs owned a 12-0 advantage in shots-on-goal and a 4-0 lead in corner kicks.

Buckhannon-Upshur was guilty of four fouls while Grafton was called for two.

Kelley didn’t make a save in net for the Bucs as Grafton didn’t get any shots off while Corriea made eight for the Bearcats.

Grafton dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-5 in the Big 10 Conference.

The Bucs improved to 7-3 overall and remained perfect in conference play with a 4-0 ledger.

The Bucs were slated to play Liberty at home Thursday.

They will return to action Saturday at Brooke at 1:30 p.m.
