Soccer Bobcats win debut against California, 2-1


CALIFORNIA (Pa.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan soccer Bobcats opened up their 2019 campaign the right way with a 2-1 victory over the California (Pa.) Vulcans in a non-conference affair Thursday night at the Phillipsburg Complex.

Both teams failed to find the back of the net in the first half.

Timothy Barney finally broke the deadlock for the Bobcats with a goal in the 68th minute with a ball placed in the top right corner.

Luca Falconieri had the assist.

California tied it nine minutes later when Eli Mitchell had a shot from 30 yards out that went over top of Wesleyan keeper Sahil Dhunnookchand.

Javier De Ona Garcia scored the game-winner for Wesleyan in the 83rd minute when he unleashed a shot from left of the box and into the top of the net.

Josh Tenney was credited with the assist.

Wesleyan owned a 6-4 lead in shots-on-goal while corner kicks were tied at 1-1.

The Bobcats were guilty of just six fouls while California was called for 28.

Dhunnookchand made three stops in net for Wesleyan while Califorina’s Joseph Valeriano made four saves.

The Bobcats were slated to face Seton Hill University in a non-conference affair Sunday afternoon.

They will return to action Thursday at home against Urbana at 7 p.m. in their Mountain East Conference opener.
