Slow start takes Buccaneers out of sectional battle with Morgantown

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Ryan Strader puts in two points in front of Morgantown’s Mac McMillan (4) during the first half of their sectional battle Wednesday night in Morgantown. Strader, the lone senior on the Buccaneer basketball team, finished with a team-high 13 points, but the Bucs dropped a 78-49 decision.

MORGANTOWN – Buckhannon-Upshur was never able to get in the game with the Morgantown Mohigans Wednesday night in their sectional opener at Morgantown High School.

The Bucs trailed by a 10-0 score after two minutes of action and were never a threat to the No. 2 Mohigans in a 78-49 setback.

“We tried to make a change and find something that works when you get down that early,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Travis Foster. “They moved hard, cut hard and just took it to us. That is probably the best play we have faced from a team all season. We threw a lot of young guys in some tough positions tonight. We had three or four sophomores on the floor at one time playing one of the best teams in the state.”

Down 10-0, Ryan Hurst finally put the Bucs on the board at the 5:53 mark with a jumper in the paint.

Trailing 14-4, Ryan Strader turned in an old-fashioned three-pointer when he was fouled on his lay-up making it a 14-7 game with four minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The Bucs would never get any closer the rest of the game.

Buckhannon-Upshur didn’t score the rest of the quarter as Morgantown went on a 13-0 run for a 27-7 advantage after eight minutes of action.

After a basket to start the quarter by Morgantown, the Bucs went on an 8-0 run when Harrison Walker put in a baseline jumper and Ryan Hurst uncorked two three-pointers cutting the deficit to 14, at 29-15.

A put back by Noam Kieth kept the Bucs down by 15, at 36-19, with 2:36 remaining in the half, but the Mohigans closed the half on a 6-0 run for a 42-19 lead at the break.

Morgantown scored the first seven points of the third quarter for a 30-point lead, at 49-19.

The Bucs kept battling as they answered with a 12-2 run.

Strader made a jumper and Lamar Hurst had a dunk, and after a Morgantown basket, Zach White scored from the paint, Strader put in two on a lay-up and Lamar Hurst and Mason Hyre downed shots as the Bucs cut the lead to 21, at 52-31, with 3:10 remaining in the third quarter.

Morgantown scored six unanswered points to push the lead to 58-31, but White scored on a put back with 1:42 left in the canto making it a 58-33 game.

The Bucs went into the fourth quarter down by a 60-35 score.

Morgantown took their biggest lead of the game, at 36 points, at 73-37, with four minutes remaining.

Ryan Hurst turned in an old-fashioned three-point play, and after a Morgantown basket, Strader scored following a rebound, Josh Loudin scored from underneath and Strader made a lay-up making it a 76-46 contest.

Will McCauley scored a lay-up with 16 seconds left for the Bucs to wrap up the scoring.

Ryan Hurst and Strader led the Bucs with 13 points apiece.

Strader is the lone senior on the team this season.

“He gives you everything night in and night out,” stated Foster. “His leadership and pride in the program, he is priceless. We are going to miss him a lot.”

Alex Rudy paced Morgantown with 26 points.

Morgantown improved to 20-3 overall and was slated to face off against University for the sectional crown Friday night.

The Bucs ended their season with a 12-11 record, their first winning season in over a decade.

“The loss was disappointing but we have come so far,” concluded Foster. “This was our first winning season in 15 years. We are climbing, we just

aren’t at a Morgantown level yet. We are already looking forward to next season.”
