GLENVILLE — Bruce Spruell fired in 27 points as Slippery Rock posted a 67-55 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on the final day of the Jakobi’s Journey Basketball Classic Sunday afternoon at the Waco Center.
The Bobcats dropped to 0-2 on the season and will open the home portion of their schedule at 4 p.m. Saturday against MEC preseason favorite Wheeling Jesuit.
Aaron Ariri produced a double-double with team highs of 14 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four assists for Wesleyan. Justice Cuthbertson added 10 points and five rebounds, while Luke Layhew contributed eight points and six rebounds.
The Bobcats shot 42.9 percent (21-for-49) from the field, 23.1 percent (3-for-13) from 3-point distance and 52.6 percent (10-for-19) from the foul line, while committing 11 turnovers and holding a 37-31 edge in rebounding.
Slippery Rock (2-0) led 35-23 at the half and extended their lead midway through the second stanza.
Coach Jack Meriwther’s squad made a pair slight runs late, but could not get the deficit inside of double digits down the stretch.
Spruell hit 11 of 13 field-goal attempts in garnering game-high honors for the Rock, which lost by 12 points (71-59) at Pittsburgh during in an exhibition contest on Nov. 4.
