Short-handed track and field Lady Bucs claim runner-up honors at home meet

TENNERTON – A short-handed Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc track and field team took second place in their weekly home meet on Tuesday.

The Lady Bucs amassed 104 points in the five-team meet while North Marion was first with 115 and Elkins was third with 56. Tucker County and North Marion rounded out the field in fourth and fifth place respectively.

“We were without three of our varsity runners for excused reasons,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jackie Zuliani. “I was very proud of the rest of the team who competed and almost pulled off the win without them.”

The Lady Bucs won five events overall, taking three individual events and two relay events.

Cameron Zuliani won the shot put (30-10) and the discus (102-06.75) while Miah Reger won the high jump (4-04).

The foursome of Allison Andrew, Jessica Williams, Miah Reger and Ashley Catlin won the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 11:10.76 and the quartet of Reger, Zuliani, Dezi Pugh and Chloe Cale won the 4x102.5-meter relay with a clocking of 1:14.59.

Cale picked up a trio of runner-up spots.

She took second in the 100-meter hurdles (17.95), the 300-meter hurdles (51.45) and the long jump (15-04.5).

Three relay teams took runner-up as the 4x100-meter relay team of Regan McVay, Kyleigh Keener, Andrew and Mia Sappey took second (57.09), the 4x200-meter relay unit of Andrew, Zuliani, Keener and Dezi Pugh finished second (1:53.38) and the 4x400-meter relay team of Andrew, Williams, Reger and Catlin took second (5:08.22).

Pugh finished third in the 200-meter dash (27.87) and the 400-meter dash (1:04.61), Kierra Arbogast took third in the 100-meter hurdles (18.10) and Catherine Neely took third in the shot put (29-06) and the discus (90-10.25).

“The girls continue to work hard,” remarked Zuliani. “It shows at every meet. They are a young group with no seniors, but they have that drive to get better. Some of them are just too hard on themselves. I keep reminding them at the end of the season, qualifying for the state meet is everyone’s goal. It will come.”

The Lady Bucs were slated to run Friday in Charleston at Laidley Field.

They will host another mid-week meet this Tuesday.
