Short-handed soccer Buccaneers fall on the road to Greenbrier East, 2-1

LEWISBURG – A short-handed Buckhannon-Upshur boys’ soccer team couldn’t hold an early lead against the Greenbrier East Spartans Saturday afternoon and wound up dropping a 2-1 decision in non-conference action.

The Bucs scored first in the 11th minute when Ryan Hurst had a throw in across the 6 and Josh Gregory put in a goal to the back post.

The Bucs would hold that 1-0 lead until the 32nd minute when Adam Seams caught up to a long ball that was played over the B-U defense and had a one-touch and shot to the near post for the score, making it a 1-1 game.

Seams had the game-winner in the 57th minute with an unassisted goal when he cleaned up a loose ball after a corner kick and scored with a shot to the near post.

The B-U offense was never able to get the game-tying goal in the final 20 minutes of action.

The Bucs were short-handed as several starters and reserves for the game didn’t make the trip as they had plans related to what was originally scheduled to be Homecoming week/dance.

“We faced an interesting challenge today going against a quality team being shorthanded with several varsity players missing, but the guys we had available were up to the task,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “The game played out very similar to when we played them earlier where they controlled a lot of the possession but we limited their chances with good defending and communication. We were able to take a lot of positives from what we saw and build that into our preparation this week once we get our full roster back.”

The two teams tied back on Sept. 5 on the turf at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium by a 2-2 score.

The Bucs owned a 5-3 lead in shots-on-goal but trailed in corner kicks by a 5-2 margin.

The Bucs were guilty of seven fouls while the Spartans were called for eight.

Dalton Auvil made one save for the Bucs in net while Joe Cochran made four saves for Greenbrier East.

The loss dropped the Bucs to 6-3-1 on the season.

They are scheduled to visit Robert C. Byrd today at 6 p.m. and then visit Morgantown on Thursday for an 8 p.m. contest.
