CHARLESTON – A short-handed Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc track and field team still made their mark in the two-day 2019 Charleston Gazette-Mail Relays last Friday and Saturday at UC Stadium/Laidley Field.
The Lady Bucs, with a shortened roster of eight performers, only entered 11 events and still took third place against the Kanawha Valley’s best teams.
The Lady Bucs accumulated 74 points while Cabell Midland took top honors with 169 points and Hurricane was second with 106.
Rounding out the top five of the 11-team event were St. Albans with 67 and George Washington with 43.
“Coming in third with such a small group just shows what a talented and determined group we have,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jackie Zuliani. “Some of the girls that did compete were going back and forth between the track and the capitol where they were participating in Youth and Government. Some of the girls couldn’t participate in certain events due to scheduling conflicts. They adjusted very well and I was pleased with their performances.”
The Lady Bucs brought home three victories in their 11 events, two individual titles and one relay win.
Earning the first were Catherine Oliveto in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.53 and Kennedi Lewellyn in the pole vault clearing at 9-00.
The 4 x 400-meter relay foursome of Cameron Zuliani, Makenzi Lewellyn, Yami Cerna and Oliveto won their race with a time of 4:16.07.
The 4:16.07 was the best time for the foursome on the season and places them second in the state at the Class AAA level.
The Lady Bucs also landed a trio of runner-ups.
Getting seconds were Makenzi Lewellyn in the 400-meter dash (1:03.69), Kennedi Lewellyn in the 300-meter hurdles (47.00) and the 4 x 200-meter relay foursome of Zuliani, Oliveto, Makenzi Lewellyn, and Kennedi Lewellyn (1:51.05).
Other individual top five finishes belonged to Makenzi Lewellyn taking third in the pole vault (9-00), Oliveto running fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.20), Kierra Arbogast placing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (18.64) and Zuliani throwing fifth in the discus (95-08).
The other top five relay finish belonged to the 4 x 102.5-meter relay unit of Zuliani, McKenzie Reynolds, Arbogast and Kennedi Lewellyn with a clocking of 1:15.71.
Three Lady Bucs recorded personal bests at Charleston – Kennedi Lewellyn in the 300-meter hurdles, Arbogast in the 100-meter hurdles and Oliveto in the 200-meters.
