Short-handed Lady Buc cagers fall to Morgantown in regional co-final

Buckhannon-Upshur’s McKenzie Reynolds (3) drives the lane and puts up a lay-up attempt against Morgantown in their regional co-final contest last Wednesday. Reynolds had five points but the Lady Bucs dropped a 51-24 decision. They ended their season with a 9-7 mark.

MORGANTOWN – Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Rob Kittle knew that his team’s depth would be a concern during the 2021 campaign.

With just a rotation of seven to begin with, injuries to starting forward Kendall Currence and reserve forward Kaira Woods left Kittle severely undermanned against the Morgantown Mohigans in their Region I co-final last Wednesday.

And as a result, the Lady Bucs dropped a 51-24 decision denying them a berth in the state tournament.

The Lady Bucs were down by a 19-6 score after one quarter getting a pair of three-pointers from McKenzie Reynolds and Shelby McDaniels.

Kenna Maxwell knocked down three treys for the Lady Bucs in the second quarter, but it was all the offense they managed as they trailed by a 38-15 score at half.

A three-pointer from McDaniels was the only third-quarter basket for the Lady Bucs  as they trailed 49-18 going into the final stanza.

The Lady Bucs managed six points in the final quarter, baskets from McDaniels and Reynolds and two free throws from Kennedy Samargo.

Maxwell led the Lady Bucs with nine points while McDaniels had eight.

Buckhannon-Upshur saw their season come to a close with a 9-7 record.

Morgantown improved to 11-2 and will be the fourth seed in the state tournament.

They will meet Wheeling Park (15-3) Thursday at 9 p.m. in the opening round of the state tournament.
