Shooting woes plague Lady Bucs in 58-47 setback to University

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Kendal Currence (23) is closely guarded by a University defender while Shelby McDaniels looks on during the third quarter of their game Friday night at the high school. Currence had six points and 10 rebounds, but the Lady Bucs dropped a 58-47 decision.

TENNERTON – Since their mandatory quarantine ended last week, the No. 10 Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs have struggled to find their shot.

They shot a season low against Preston County last Wednesday and fared even worse shooting the ball against No. 13 University Friday night.

The Lady Bucs struggled in the field shooting just 23.8 on the night making 15 of their 63 field goals.

B-U also found the going tough inside against the taller Hawks as University collected seven blocks during the game.

Despite the poor performance shooting the Lady Bucs were still in the game until the very end and actually had a strong start to the contest.

Leading 5-4, Gabby Parke made a three-pointer, and after a University basket, Parke uncorked another trey making it an 11-6 lead for the Lady Bucs.

University went on a 6-0 run for a 12-11 lead, but Parke ended the quarter with a lay-up returning the advantage back to the Lady Bucs, at 13-12.

The Hawks started the second quarter on an 8-2 run, but Kenna Maxwell made a pair of free throws and Kennedy Samargo scored on a putback to close it to just a one-point game, at 20-19.

McKenzie Reynolds downed two free throws to wrap up the half, keeping the Lady Bucs down by just two, at 25-23.

University stretched their lead to 32-26, but Kendal Currence put in consecutive baskets for B-U to make it a 32-30 contest.

An 8-2 run by University increased the Lady Buc deficit to eight, at 40-32, but Kiara Woods put in a one-handed jumper to end the third-quarter scoring, pulling them to within six, at 40-34.

A 12-6 run for University to start the fourth quarter put the Lady Bucs down, 50-40, but Samargo hit an outside jumper, and after a University basket, Parke drained a three-pointer to pull B-U to within seven, at 52-45, with 1:57 remaining in the game.

After a University free throw, Samargo made it a two-possession game with two free throws, at 52-47.

The B-U trap forced a University turnover, but the Lady Bucs couldn’t convert on their end.

The Lady Bucs failed to score the rest of the way as University ended the game on a 5-0 run.

Parke led the B-U offense with 13 points while Samargo had nine.

Ashlyn Weaver led University with 15 points.

The loss dropped the Lady Bucs to 4-3 on the season heading into Monday’s road clash with Morgantown.

They will be back in action Wednesday at Philip Barbour with a 7:30 p.m. start.
