BUCKHANNON — Company officials say the newest shoe store coming to Buckhannon in March — Shoe Sensation — is the perfect fit for the Upshur County community.
Shoe Sensation, a nationwide chain based in Jeffersonville, Ind., is planning a soft opening for March 3, and will be located at 80 Skyline Plaza Dr., Suite 136. Taylor McAdams, public relations coordinator for the chain, said the Buckhannon location will be the third store Shoe Sensation has opened in West Virginia — the other two being in New Martinsville and Moundsville.
McAdams, who said the growing chain plans on opening 25 locales in 2017, said Buckhannon was chosen because of its small-town demographics. Already, the chain operates 145 stores in 18 different states.
“We operate mainly in small towns, not big cities,” McAdams said. “We like to be the one-stop shop shoe store for the entire family. We usually open in places where the population ranges from 5,000 people to 25,000 people. It’s also based on areas around the county — like if you have a larger population living outside the city.”
Despite plans for a soft opening March 3, Shoe Sensation is prepping for a grand opening involving a Buckhannon-Upshur Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. on March 9.
“We try to make it like a weekend event,” McAdams said. Shoe Sensation will be rewarding its first 100 customers with a free, surprise gift from Thursday, March 9 through Sunday, March 12. During that time period, store frequenters can also register to win a free pair of shoes for their entire immediate family. In addition, starting March 3 — the store’s soft opening — Shoe Sensation will be distributing coupons for 20 percent off that will be applicable through March 12.
So, what sets Shoe Sensation aside from other shoe stores in the area or surrounding counties? McAdams said it’s the wide variety of brands and types of shoes the store carries — as well as its commitment to community service.
“We like to provide a selection for the whole family,” McAdams said. “We carry Nike, Under Armour, Clarks, Skechers, Converse, Vans, Asics, Sperry, as well as western boots and cleats. We will also have steel-toed working boot, which sets us aside from a lot of our competitors.
“Another one of our main things we like to do is we like to be involved in the community, so we are joining the chamber, trying to attend community events and also get involved with nonprofits,” she said, adding that the store is happy to donate gift cards to local auctions or other such events. “I know we are a regional shoe store, but we want Buckhannon’s Shoe Sensation to be Buckhannon’s Shoe Sensation. We try to hire as local as possible. We try to have all of our staff from Buckhannon.”
Speaking of hiring, Shoe Sensation will be hiring two full-time employees — one manager and one assistant manager — as well as about 10 part-time employees. Anyone interested in applying for a position should visit www.shoesensation.com/careers to jumpstart the application process.
“We’re really excited about opening in Buckhannon,” McAdams said. “They’re (the employees) are going to have a lot of knowledge on the product. I buy a new pair of shoes every time I walk into our store. We have great prices, and it’s all about keeping the money local, so you don’t have to drive out of town.”
