Shirley Marie Foster, 75, of Horner, left her earthly body on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon. She was surrounded by family and loved ones who will very much miss her brightly shining light.
She blessed this Earth and the lives of her parents on April 22, 1944 in Weston. She was a daughter of the late Everett Ross and Mary Letha Bott Hawkins.
On April 14, 1963, she married her best friend and the love of her life, Roger Dell Foster. During their 56 joyful years of marriage, they enjoyed roller-skating, dancing and raising their two wonderful daughters.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Roger; two daughters: Arria Hines and husband, Michael, of Horner, and Cathy Cayton and husband, Bobby, of Morgantown; four grandchildren: Chase Kempinski, Danica Wilberger and husband, Adam, Abia Whiston, and Owen Cayton; and three siblings: Mary Helen McQuain and husband, James, of Alexandria, VA, Rella Grey Smith of Vandalia, WV, and Tom Hawkins and wife, Terri, of Jane Lew.
Preceding Shirley in death were her parents and one brother, Ben Hawkins.
Shirley retired from Stonewall Jackson Resort where she worked her way from housekeeper to supervisor in the 20 years of her employment. She attended St. Matthew United Methodist Church and was a member of Vandalia United Methodist Church.
Shirley was a woman of grit and wit and a true matriarch of her family. She enjoyed tending to her garden and truly valued a clean and tidy house. She was an amazing cook known for her creamed tomatoes, which will be missed by all who were lucky enough to eat them. Shirley never missed a trick and loved a good sweet treat, especially her husband’s peanut butter fudge. She was a woman of determination and strong will whose opinion was always known and valued, especially when her coffee was too strong. Shirley was a one of a kind woman. Shirley had a strength that rarely wavered. She was happiest when all of her family was together, even though she always said they were a bit too loud. It is hard to put so much personality into words. All those who were lucky enough to know Shirley instantly felt the warmth of her heart but knew she was a force to be reckoned with.
The family greatly appreciates all the love and support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers or food, donations may be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation – http://give.bcrf.org/give/31404/#!/donation/checkout.
