Service members smile for Freedom Day USA

BUCKHANNON — The 9th Annual Freedom Day USA event brought dozens of service men and women to Wilson Martino Dental in Buckhannon for complimentary dental care on Thursday.

Dr. Robert Martino, owner of Wilson Martino Dental, founded the event back in 2012 in West Virginia. Upon talking to many of Martino’s esteemed colleagues and friends, the day was able to evolve into a nationwide event in which businesses use Freedom Day USA as a special way to give away goods and services to active members of the military, veterans, and their families. The event has grown drastically from the first year and will soon be celebrating a large milestone.

Locally, multiple businesses took the initiative to join Martino in thanking these amazing men and women for their service to America. Everything from food and haircuts to large discounts and dental procedures were given out on October 14.

Over 200 military members and their family members were scheduled for appointments on Thursday. Included at Wilson Martino Dental were as many complimentary services as they could possibly provide. Anything from an extraction to a root canal was performed for free, along with cleanings and oral cancer screenings. Typically, over $100,000 in services are performed just in offices located in West Virginia; however, the national impact reaches into the millions.

“We are so appreciative of this opportunity. Knowing that businesses care enough to give us, military members, undivided attention regardless of our financial situations means more than anything,” said Rick Weaver, United States Navy Veteran.

“It is really unique to have a whole town participate in such a giving event. Everyone takes the time to thank these people who so graciously put their lives on the line for our country,” expressed Wendy Boyce, Freedom Day USA National Director / WV State Director.

With the 10-year anniversary of the event approaching next year, Dr. Martino and his team are extending a challenge to all of the Mountain State. The team would like to have every business in West Virginia participating in some capacity next year, even if that means donating to just one service member. The 2022 Freedom Day USA event will take place on October 13 and any business interested in participating in the National Thank You Movement or anyone wanting to sign up as a participant for future events should visit

From The Record Delta, thank you to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country!
