BUCKHANNON — During the Thursday, August 11, County Commission meeting at the Courthouse Annex, Senators Bill Hamilton and Robert Karnes presented checks to the Kesling Mill Lion’s Club and the Upshur County Youth Camp.
A letter from the Governor was also presented, but not read to those in attendance. Senator Hamilton and Senator Karnes presented a $10,000 check for the Upshur County Youth Camp for anything they need to help make their endeavors better.
The donation to the Kesling Mill Lion’s Club was more personal to Senator Hamilton. The check is specifically for the Kesling Mill Community Building. With this being Sen. Hamilton’s 20th year in legislature, he has presented check on behalf of Kesling Mill projects throughout the years. The $8,780 is for the replacement of the roof for the Community Building. “My partner, best friend and advisor, James (Mac) McGraw was patiently waiting for the check, but unfortunately didn’t get to see it as he has recently passed. But I know he’s looking down and appreciating the help we could give to the community.”
McGraw served in the U.S. Army. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Buckhannon, Kesling Mill Lions Club and a past board member of the Upshur County Parish House.
Karnes expressed that he has been to the Kesling Mill Community Building on several occasions for certain events. He has been for family reunions, graduation parties, community socials, and more. “It’s a shame how we have closed down several of these old schoolhouses in the past, but at the same time you can see how these community buildings have become sort of the “hub” of the community and everybody still gathers there. We want to make sure these structures have everything they need in order to provide what they need.”
