Second-half surge leads Bucs to 4-2 win over Bees

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Buccaneers used a strong second half to get past the East Fairmont Bees by a 4-2 score Thursday evening in Big 10 Conference action at Ted Crites Alumni Field at Tom Hasbrouck Stadium.

The Bucs trailed by a 2-1 score at the half but scored three unanswered goals in the second half for the win.

The victory ended a two-game slide for head coach Mike Donato and his Buccaneers.

Ryan Hurst put the Bucs on the scoreboard first when he dribbled in from the top of the penalty area and scored with a shot to the far post in the 20th minute.

East Fairmont took over control of the game during the next 15 minutes of action as they scored a pair of goals.

Lane Cerullo controlled a ball misplayed by the B-U defense and scored in the 24th minute and then came back in the 34th minute with an unassisted goal when he dribbled it through the defense and scored with a shot to the far post.

That gave the Bees a 2-1 lead and it was the score they took into halftime with them.

The Bucs rebounded in the second half and tied the game in the 48th minute when Hurst tallied his second goal of the game when he played a through ball from Caden Andrick and dribbled into the box and finished with a shot to the far post.

Lane Tenney gave the Bucs a 3-2 lead in the 60th minute when he put a shot through the East Fairmont keeper Cole Peschi’s hands after playing a pass from Hurst that went to the top of the penalty area.

Bryer Ketterman gave the Bucs some breathing room with an unassisted goal in the 69th minute.

He took a poor clear by East Fairmont and put a shot back to the near post that sneaked past Peschi to give the Bucs their 4-2 lead.

“I give the guys a lot of credit for not getting down on themselves at the half and really stepping up to come back and win this game,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “I really see that as a turning point for us and something we can grow on going forward. Hopefully the team proved to themselves they can play aggressive and step up and compete with any team in the state. I give the seniors a lot of credit too. I challenged them at the half to step up and lead their team and they did exactly that.”

The Bucs owned a 12-5 lead in shot-on-goal and a 6-5 margin in corner kicks.

Buckhannon-Upshur was guilty of three fouls while East Fairmont was called for four.

Dalton Auvil made three saves for the Bucs in net while Peschi made five stops for East Fairmont.

The win improved the Bucs to 6-2-1 on the season overall and 5-1 in the Big 10 Conference while East Fairmont dropped to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

The Bucs will return to action today traveling to Greenbrier East for a 1:30 p.m. contest.

They will stay on the road Tuesday and face Robert C. Byrd at 6 p.m.
