BUCKHANNON — The Upshur County Board of Education approved an increase for principals and directors at its Monday meeting.

The board had been approached by the Upshur County Principals Association about disparity in salaries among different counties.

The first reading and approval of proposed revised Policy 8006 — Salary Schedules and other Compensation  — included a $100 increase in the  monthly supplement for principals and assistant principals. Central office staff will also see an increase based on their 10-month salary.

The changes will take effect for this fiscal year.

Dr. Tammy Samples, who had been re-elected as board president earlier in the meeting, said, “It doesn’t impact the authorization of this, but I do think at some point we should look at extra curriculars — both athletic and the other co-curricular positions — and see if those are equitable across each of those positions. It doesn’t have to be now. We can approve these changes to the principal and director salaries now, but I think at a future meeting we need to start looking at those just to make sure people are being compensated for what they are doing as much as we can do that.”

Board member Kristi Wilkerson voted to approve the raises, seconded by Dr. Greenbrier Almond. The motion passed. Board member Alan Suder was absent.

In other business, the board also voted to purchase 9 E. Victoria St. Board vice president Katie Loudin, who was elected to the position earlier in the meeting, moved to purchase the property, seconded by Wilkerson.

Almond noted the board had been able to negotiate down to a purchase price of $55,000. The property backs up to the Buckhannon Academy Elementary School younger playground area.

In other business, the board:

* Agreed for Almond to continue serving on the Fred Eberle Technical Center Administrative Council for a two-year term and for Samples to serve on the Stockert Youth Center board of directors for a two-year term.

* Approved the reappointment of Hannah Lively as a representative on the Buckhannon-Upshur Parks and Recreation Board for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2018 and ending June 30, 2020.

* The next regular board of education meeting will be Tuesday, July 24 at 7 p.m. at the board of education office.
