BUCKHANNON — Founded in 1932, Sons of the American Legion exists to honor the service and sacrifice of Legionnaires. The Buckhannon Post 7 American Legion is proud to announce the forming of a local Sons of the American Legion (SAL) in this community. Post 7 approved the forming of this organization at their Tuesday evening meeting. Mike Wallace of Post 7 was designated as the SAL Coordinator. The mission of the SAL is to strengthen the four pillars of The American Legion.
All male descendants, adopted sons and stepsons of members of The American Legion, and such male descendants of veterans who died in service during World I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf War, and the War on Terrorism or who died subsequent to their honorable discharge from such service, shall be eligible for membership in the Sons of the American Legion.
Together, members of The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary, and the Sons of the American Legion make up what is known as The Legion Family. All three organizations place high importance on preserving American traditions and values, improving the quality of life for our nation’s children, caring for veterans and their families, and perhaps most importantly, teaching the fundamentals of good citizenship.
Sons focus on much more than just membership. At all levels, Sons support The American Legion in promoting a wide variety of programs. The SAL assist their posts in other activities such as Veterans programs, Veterans Administration home and hospital volunteerism, youth projects and fundraising. Any male descendant wishing to become a member of The Sons of the American Legion are welcome to Post 7 and can call the Post at 304-460-7377 on Thursdays between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
