GRAFTON – Buckhannon-Upshur’s Ryan Hurst scored a game-high 32 points to lead the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers to a 93-88 victory over the homestanding Grafton Bearcats Monday night.

The game featured plenty of offense and very little defense from either team.

The Bucs, who were down by 12 points on two different occasions in the first half, used a 62-point second half to lift them past the Bearcats.

Both teams shot the ball extremely well as the Bucs were at 61.3 percent from the floor making good on 38 of their 62 attempts while Grafton was at 59.7 percent connecting on 34 of their 57 field goal attempts.

As Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Travis Foster told WVMetro News after the game, “I don’t think either team could guard a parked car tonight. They couldn’t defend and we couldn’t defend.”

The Bucs raced out to an early 4-0 lead after baskets from Harrison Walker and Lamar Hurst, but a 9-4 run from Grafton gave the Bearcats their first lead, at 9-8, with 3:48 left in the first quarter.

Grafton closed the quarter on a 10-4 run for a 19-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

A lay-up by Grafton’s Jacob Mair gave the Bearcats their first 12-point lead, at 30-18, with four minutes remaining and Grafton still led by 12 late in the second quarter, up 41-29 after a trey by Justin Spiker.

Ryan Hurst made a jumper at the first-half buzzer to make it a 41-31 game at the intermission.

The Bucs were down by 11, at 47-36, when they went on a 7-0 fueled by a putback from Josh Loudin, a three-pointer from Lamar Hurst and a jumper in the paint from Ryan Hurst to cut the Grafton lead to four, at 47-43, with 5:27 remaining in the third quarter.

Still down by four, at 53-49, Loudin and White made short jumpers tying the game at 53-53.

Following a lay-up by Maier, White scored with a lay-up and Will McCauley knocked down a jumper as the Bucs took over the lead, at 57-55.

Buckhannon-Upshur owned a 61-60 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

The two teams traded the lead back and forth five times and the game was tied on five occasions in the first five minutes of the final quarter, but the Bucs found themselves down by three, at 81-78, following a lay-up by Grafton’s Kaden Delaney with 2:30 left to play.

Ryan Hurst unleashed a three-pointer and White grabbed a rebound and put it back in restoring the lead back to the Bucs, at 83-81 with 1:40 left.

B-U would never give the lead back to Grafton after that.

With the game tied at 83-83, Walker knocked down a key baseline jumper and Ryan Hurst had a steal and a lay-up to put the Bucs up 87-83 with 38 seconds remaining.

The Bucs then sealed the deal at the free throw line going six-for-six in the final 30 seconds of the game securing the win.

White added 21 points in his best scoring effort of the year and hauled down six rebounds.

Loudin had a double-double with 16 point and 12 rebounds while swatting away three shots.

Lamar Hurst was the other B-U player to reach double digits as he finished the game with 12 points.

Grafton was led by Spiker’s 25 points while Tanner Moats added 20.

The Bucs held a huge rebounding margin against the Bearcats, 38-17.

Grafton fell to 11-4 on the season while the Bucs improved to 11-4 overall.

The Bucs will head to South Charleston today and face the South Charleston Black Eagles at 7 p.m. and then will host Jefferson on Saturday at 4 p.m. in their regular-season finale.
