Mr. Roy Dean Pennington, age 85 years, a resident of Buckhannon, departed this life to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, September 4, 2022 at his home under the care of West Virginia Hospice. He was born May 5, 1937, at Benbush, W.Va. a son of the late Remer and Iva Helmick Pennington.
On June 15, 1958, he was married to Vonda Jill Moore, who survives in Buckhannon. They had recently celebrated 64 years of marriage.
Also surviving is one son, Mark Lee Pennington and wife Tammy Dawn Pennington, of Beaver, Pa.; one granddaughter, Tiffany Fawn Pennington Curtis and husband Joshua, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one grandson, Justin Allen Pennington, of Masontown, Pa.; two great-grandsons: Jakob Alexander and Maddox Dean Curtis; and his faithful dog, Scottie.
Also preceding him in death were two sons: Frederick Dean Pennington and Allen Wayne Pennington; and five brothers and four sisters.
Roy was a member of the Living Word Church of God in Buckhannon where he served on the Finance Committee. He loved the Lord. He was a quiet, gentle and humble person who would do anything for anyone. His sons called him “Pops.” He was a member of the UMWA Local 4172 for 47 years and served as Financial Secretary for 35 years. He was a fisherman, loved WVU football, basketball and the Pittsburgh Steelers and a few other NFL teams. He enjoyed playing dominoes and going to breakfast with the Sharps and McCollums. “It’s hard to let go and hang on at the same time.” As Brother Spears commented, “The best is yet to come.” His grandson Justin stated, “Grandpa lived his life for this day.”
Friends may call from noon until 1 p.m. Thursday, September 8, 2022 at the Living Word Church of God in Buckhannon. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday from the church with Pastor Frank Spears officiating. Interment will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery in Elkins.
