Rough second quarter cost Lady Bobcats in 74-61 setback to Concord in MEC play


ATHENS – A tough second quarter erased an early lead and sent the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat basketball team to a second loss in as many games.

Wesleyan led the Concord Mt. Lions by a 23-18 score after one quarter of action, but a five-point second quarter put them down at the half by four and they never recovered dropping a 74-61 decision Wednesday evening in the Mountain East Conference contest.

Wesleyan never trailed in the first quarter as Malika Kimmons started the scoring with a jumper a minute into the contest.

Wesleyan built their first quarter lead all the way up to nine points, at 18-9, following a three-pointer by Symphonie Bryant-Brown at the 3:53 mark.

Wesleyan took a five-point lead with them into the second quarter, up 23-18.

Riley Fitzwater started the second-quarter scoring for Concord with a lay-up, but Kimmons went inside for two points for Wesleyan making it a 25-20 game a minute in.

Unfortunately for Wesleyan, their offense went cold during the next eight minutes of the game.

During that span, the Lady ‘Cats went 0-for-10 from the floor with four turnovers as Concord took a 30-25 lead.

Courtney Wilfong finally made a basket for Wesleyan at the 1:31 mark with a lay-up and made a free throw after being fouled on the play, bringing the Lady ‘Cats to within two, at 30-28.

Fitzwater made a lay-up at the buzzer making it a 32-28 score at the intermission.

Abi Gabauer made a basket for Wesleyan just 12 seconds into the second half, keeping Wesleyan down by just two, at 32-30.

The Lady ‘Cats couldn’t get any closer though as Concord ballooned their lead up to 14 points, at 49-35, following a basket by Maddie Ratcliff with 3:33 left in the quarter.

Wesleyan trailed by 11 heading into the final frame, at 53-42.

A jumper by Wilfong brought Wesleyan to within eight, at 65-57, with 3:38 left in the game but Concord controlled the final three minutes of action.

The Mt. Lions went on a 9-0 run taking a 74-57 advantage with 53 seconds left.

Gabauer wrapped up the scoring with a lay-up for Wesleyan with 32 seconds left.

Wilfong had a team-high 19 points for Wesleyan while Gabauer was the other Lady Bobcat in double digits with 10 points.

Fitzwater led Concord with 21 points while Maggie Guynn added 17 and Keely Lundy came off the bench to record 13 points.

Concord improved to 2-1 overall and in the MEC.

Wesleyan dropped to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the MEC.

They will return to action today hosting Glenville State at 2 p.m.
