MORGANTOWN – A disastrous first quarter did in the Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity Buccaneers against the University Hawks Tuesday night in a 67-47 setback.
A basket by Ian Strader was the only scoring the Bucs could produce in the opening quarter as they fell behind by a 16-2 score.
The Bucs picked it up and won the second quarter by an 18-15 margin.
Strader had five points in the quarter while Shelton Thropp and Shawn Blandino added four each and Keyton Lanier popped in a three-pointer and Zach Calef-Boring put in a jumper.
The Buccaneers still trailed at the intermission by a 31-20 margin.
Buckhannon-Upshur lost the third quarter by a 17-16 margin with Calef-Boring putting in five points, Oliver King and Blandino four each and Strader three.
That left the Bucs down by a 48-36 margin heading into the fourth quarter.
The Hawks pulled away in the fourth winning it by a 19-11 margin.
Calef-Boring put in two three-pointers, Strader one three-pointer and Gage Raschella a basket for the Bucs in the final period.
Calef-Boring led the Bucs in scoring with 13 points.
Cody Thomas paced University with 25 points, hitting seven treys.
The loss dropped the Buc to 5-5 on the season as they travel to Philip Barbour today for a 5:45 p.m. contest.
