BUCKHANNON — A single vehicle accident resulted in a rollover and entrapment on Hickory Flat Road shortly after midnight on Thursday.
Upshur County Sheriff’s Department Deputy S. Cutright responded to the crash that sent a 2018 Subaru Legacy airborne for approximately 75 feet before landing on its top. The car was driven by Samuel Jones, age 28, of Buckhannon.
According to the investigating officer, the car ran off the road to the left and struck an embankment, then went airborne and landed on its top. The vehicle continued sliding upside down to the right side of the road and struck a guardrail before finally coming to rest at the edge of a ditch.
Jones stated he “passed out and woke up on the inside roof of the car” but told law enforcement he did not recall what happened. Multiple airbags deployed and Jones was entrapped, so the Buckhannon Fire Department and other volunteer firefighters had to use the jaws of life to extricate him from the car. Upshur EMS transported Jones to St. Joseph’s Hospital for non-incapacitating injuries once he was removed from the car.
Weather conditions and speed were listed as contributing factors for the crash, as it was reportedly raining and the road surface was potentially icy or frosted when the temperature dropped that night. Jones was reportedly driving too fast for the weather conditions and failed to maintain control of the vehicle, but no citations were issued.
