Roland “Ron” F. Byrd, 88, of San Jose, California, passed away at home on October 7, 2020. Ron was previously a long-time resident of Rock Cave, West Virginia and Lake Station, Indiana. Ron was also known for his work in the community appearing as Santa Claus for many years.
He was born on July 24,1932 in McCool, Indiana to the late Henry Bird and Bessie McCorkel. Also preceding him in death was his wife of 19 years, Marlene L. Byrd and his brothers, Rex Byrd and Leonard Konjak.
He is survived by four children: Robert (Beth) Byrd of Chesteron, IN; Patty (Donald-deceased) Mullendore of Lake Station, IN; Tom Byrd of Buckhannon, WV; and David Byrd of Nacaodoches, TX; three stepchildren: Monica Kraft (Anne Riley) of San Jose, CA, Michael (Jana) Kraft of Valpariso, IN, and Brian (Tammy) Portlock of Lexington, SC; six grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and his sisters Nonnie (Joe) Karriman and Barbara Howard.
Mr. Byrd served our country during the Korean War stationed in Panama. Ron was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Buckhannon. He worked for US Steel in Gary, Indiana for 25 years.
Memorial service will be held at the Salem Ridge Church Cemetery in Rock Cave on Saturday, July 10 at 2 p.m.
