Rodney Harvey “Sonny” Hunt


TENNERTON — Rodney Harvey “Sonny” Hunt, 81, of Florida St. Buckhannon passed away at 11:35 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018 in the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown following complications from a stroke.

He was born in Washington, Pa. on Dec.10, 1936 a son of the late Rodney Clay Hunt and Sara Francis Conger Hunt.

His committed, hardworking nature is part of the legacy that he leaves behind for his two children: Duane Hunt and wife, Paula, of Clermont Fla., along with their children: Richard, Austin, Darren and Sarah Hunt, and their granddaughter, Carter Hunt, and Melissa Cramer of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., along with her children: Aubrey Hunt, Tyler, Ashley and Chase. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Richard Carrier, of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Tammy Foster and Clara Carrier.

Sonny graduated from Ft. Lauderdale High School in 1956 where, as a talented drummer, he performed in the Orange Bowl Parade and at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. He worked as a referee and private teacher at the Oakland Manors Rink for many years, and was a naturally talented, competitive bowler who played in numerous leagues for over 20 years. He was employed as a meter reader for the City of Ft. Lauderdale for 20-plus years, then as a maintenance worker for Yankee Stadium for 10 years, and W.Va. Wesleyan College, where he retired with 10 years of service.As an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching college and pro football and baseball, he trained to become a well-seasoned and highly respected Little League coach who trained and mentored youth for 40 years, encouraging them to set goals, work hard and meet their potential. Sonny’s request for cremation has been honored. Friends and family will gather at the First Christian Church of Wilton Manors in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11 a.m. with Dr. John W. Stauffer officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Garden Central in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
