TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur High School junior varsity Buccaneers (3-6) took on the East Fairmont junior varsity Bees team at home during the game originally slated to tip off Saturday, January 19 that was rescheduled for Monday, January 31.

In the make-up game the JV Bucs built an early 14-12 lead first quarter lead before ultimately falling behind late midway through the second to head into halftime down, 25-21. The sophomore duo of Nathaniel Ringer and Jaden Westfall combined for 11 of the Bucs 21 first-half points.

At the start of the second half, the Bucs went down early, but dug in and fought hard to keep the game within striking distance. B-U scored 14 third quarter points however the East Fairmont built on their halftime lead. Ringer accounted for half of the Bucs points in the third, continuing his outstanding scoring night by adding 7 points to his total in the period. At the end of three, the game was slipping away from the Bucs, down 10 points entering the fourth quarter.

In the end, the JV Bucs comeback attempt fell just short, losing to the Bees by a final score of 60-50. While the Bucs couldn’t quite make a solid run in the second half to seriously threaten the lead, they were able to keep the game within single-digits for most of that time. With the loss, the JV Bucs drop to 3-7 this season.

Ringer ended the game having scored 17 total points comprised of 3 made 3-point field goals, 3 made 2-point field goals and a perfect 2-2 (100%) from the free throw line. The sophomore point/shooting guard followed up a strong 5 point opening quarter with 12 second half points in the 60-50 loss to the junior varsity Bees.

Sophomore Luke Yardley was the only other junior varsity Buc that reached double-digit scoring numbers against the Bees, scoring 12 total, hitting 3 2-point field goals, while shooting 6-8 (75%) shooting from the charity stripe.

Freshman guard Carter Zuliani had a strong outing for the junior varsity Bucs scoring 7 total points, hitting 2 2-point field goals and shooting 3-4 (75%) from the free throw line. Zuliani scored 3 of the junior varsity Bucs 7 points in the second quarter, providing a spark of offense when the junior varsity Bucs desperately needed one.

Sophomore Bryson Johnston scored all 6 of his points in the game’s fourth and final quarter, hitting 3 late 2-point friend goals to close out an otherwise quiet night offensively on a positive note.

Sophomore Jaden Westfall, a regular varsity contributor, played valuable minutes for the JV Bucs in the first half of their match up with the Bees. By halftime, Westfall took advantage of his opportunities offensively, making a 2-point field goal and sinking 4 of his 6 attempts from the free throw line, chipping in 6 first half points to help the Bucs stay within striking distance entering the locker-room.

Junior Keyton Lanier scored his lone 2 points on the evening by hitting a lay-up in the third quarter. Lanier’s contribution rounded out the scoring numbers for the Bucs against East Fairmont.
