Richard “Dick” Bennett was the son of Clyde H. and Audra Bennett of the Kesling Mill Road area.
Born in 1940, he was a graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School. He went into the United States Air Force and was a flight engineer by trade. He served as a Ranch Hand May ‘68 - May ‘69. He received a Silver Star and a Distinguished Flying Cross for actions in Vietnam, along with many other awards and honors. He got out of the Airforce in 1972.
He was a charter member of the Upshur County Emergency Medical Services. He also served his community throughout his law enforcement career in the Buckhannon Police Dept., the Upshur County Sheriffs Dept. and the Lewis County Sheriffs Dept. He was a crew member on the C-130H at Yeager Airport for the Charleston National Guard until his retirement in 1991. He also served as manager of the Upshur Regional Airport until his retirement in 2014.
He is survived by his daughters: Tracy Sheets, Lynda Braden, and Christine Bennett with her husband Shannon Daugherty; and their mother, Dee Bennett.
He is also survived by grandchildren: Bryan Spencer with his wife Elizabeth Spencer and their children: Victoria, Lilly and Hadley; Ashley Farley with her husband Buck Farley and their son Xander; Katrina Dowell with her children: Isaiah, Brianna and Kaliyah; Melissa Dowell; Thomas Stinson; Anthony McWhorter; Cody McGuire; Erin McGuire and her son Brayden; and Brooke McGuire.
He will be buried at Salisbury National Military Cemetery in North Carolina. Services will be for immediate family only and flowers cannot be accepted due to Covid restrictions.
