BUCKHANNON — Republicans successfully swept every race in Upshur County in the 2020 General Election Tuesday night. All 21 voting precincts were in for tabulation at 9:03 p.m. after voters came out to the polls and voted by mail in near record numbers with an overall 70.98 percent turnout.
Prior to Election Day on November 3, County Clerk Carol Smith said 4,051 Upshur Countians had already early voted. Additionally, 1,829 absentee ballots had been returned out of the 1,906 requested, for a total of 5,880 people voting before Election Day. The final tally as of Tuesday night was 10,236 ballots cast out of the 14,421 registered voters in the county.
Any ballots the County Clerk receives that were postmarked by Tuesday will still be counted, and results of the local election will be certified after canvassing on Monday, November 9.
While none of the county offices were contested, the race for 11th District State Senator was the closest contest with Robert Karnes edging Denise Campbell out locally, as well as statewide.
