HUNTINGTON — The Randolph Area YMCA Swim Team (RAYS) competed in the West Virginia State USA Swimming Championships held Thursday over the weekend at Marshall University.
The RAYS had four swimmers competing and all had to qualify to enter the meet.
Teams from West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky competed in the 15-team meet and the RAYS placed sixth overall.
During the three-day meet, which concluded on Sunday, each swimmer swam in nine or 10 events.
The RAYS were represented by Preston Bennett, Carter Zuliani, Cameron Zuliani and Alayna Whitehair and all four set a personal best during the competition.
Carter Zuliani, in the 9-10-year-old division, captured titles in the 200 freestyle (2:24.07), 100 IM (1:17.04), 50 freestyle (28.87), 50 backstroke (35.13), 50 butterfly (34.57) and 100 freestyle (1:05.91).
He was the high-point winner for his age group.
Bennett was high-point runner-up in the 11-12-year-old age group. He captured first in the 50 backstroke (31.81), 100 backstroke (1:08.95) and 200 backstroke (2:26.82).
In the 11-12-year old girls age group, Cameron Zuliani placed fourth overall and won titles in the 50 freestyle (26.42) and 50 butterfly (28.78).
Whitehair, meanwhile, also had a strong showing in the 11-12-year old girls age division by placing in the top 10 in eight different events.
Several members of the RAYS will now take part in the YMCA Zones this weekend at Bowling Green University in Toledo, Ohio.
Preston Bennett earned a spot with his performance over the weekend, while Carter and Cameron Zuliani had already qualified.
They will be joined by teammates Cadence Vincent, Riley Vincent, Isaac Anger and Lucas Anger at the competition, which will be held Friday through Sunday.
