ELKINS — Local racing enthusiasts will have had to wait just a bit longer than usual to enjoy the annual exciting, paint-trading action at the nearby Elkins raceway this summer, as the 2022 season opener has been continually delayed due to rain impacting the safety of track conditions.
After having the season debut date pushed back a few with several rain cancellations, it looked as if the race was on for this past weekend as racers and fans alike flocked to the grandstands Saturday, May 21.
As drivers and pit crews began to unload and make last minute preparations for an evening of hard-nosed, old-school racing, a storm front drifted in that threatened the night’s festivities. After a few tense moments of uncertainty, the decision was made to postpone the race to a later date after the rain and lightning commenced.
With the cancellation, the planned start to the Elkins Raceway’s regular season was moved to this coming Saturday, May 28. With regular racing in all divisions, in addition to the rained-out feature races from the last weekend’s postponed races highlighting what is sure to be an action-packed Saturday night. Gates at the Elkins Raceway are set open at 5 p.m. this Saturday, with hot laps at 7:30 p.m. The price of general admission is only $15, with kids 11-and-under free receiving free entry.
