TENNERTON – Maggie Queen scored three goals and added three assists to help lead the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc soccer team to a convincing 10-1 victory in their 2020 debut over the Lincoln Cougars Thursday night at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.
Queen was hardly the only offense for the Lady Bucs though as Catherine Oliveto, Maggie Nolte and Lexi Kelley each tallied two goals and Cameron Zuliani had one.
Lincoln actually scored first when Carlie Lanham tallied an unassisted goal following a B-U turnover.
The Lady Bucs shook off their slow start when Queen scored the first of her three goals with the assist going to Ashley Catlin in the 16th minute.
Kelley gave the Lady Bucs the lead for good with a goal in the 27th minute with the assist being credited to Queen.
Queen came back with her second goal of the game six minutes later with Gracie Boyles getting the assist.
The Lady Bucs tacked on one more goal in the first half when Kelley scored again with the assist going to Chloe Cale.
Buckhannon-Upshur led at the break by a 4-1 score.
“We started off really slow,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jackie Zuliani. “It just seemed like we weren’t able to get much going. They scored their goal on a pass from us to one of their forwards and she got in between our defense and made a nice shot and they were on top. That was a wakeup call and we began to settle in and work the ball and make some great plays.”
The Lady Bucs dominated the second half with six goals.
Oliveto scored a pair of goals in a 10-minute span with Zuliani getting the assist on the first goal and Queen the assist on the second goal.
That upped the Buckhannon-Upshur lead to 6-1.
Zuliani set up Queen for her third goal in the 63rd minute lifting the B-U advantage to 7-1.
Nolte then got into the scoring act with two goals in 90 seconds as the Lady Bucs made it a 9-1 contest.
Zuliani put the finishing touches on the scoring with a goal in the 75th minute with the assist going to Oliveto.
“We had several players that had good games but I want to point out a couple that really stood out,” remarked Zuliani. “Maggie Queen did exactly what is asked of her from that center mid position. She commanded the field and had a great game. I also want to mention that I started freshman Allison Andrew as an outside defender and she did a great job. She is very coachable, works hard and wants to get better. She is aggressive, won’t back down to anyone, and has great speed. She didn’t look like a freshman, and as she gets more comfortable with the pace of a high school game, I think you will be hearing her name often.”
The Lady Bucs owned a 25-2 lead in shots-on-goal and a 15-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Kiki Arbogast and Kyndal Davis shared time in the net and the duo turned away just one shot.
Prior to the start of the game, the Lady Bucs recognized their six seniors as they held Senior Night during the opener.
The Lady Bucs, now 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big 10 Conference, will play Parkersburg today at 11 a.m.
