Public Works Board considers BBQ Rib Bash, added security

BUCKHANNON The City Council of Buckhannon held a brief Consolidated Public Works Board meeting early Thursday evening. Several citizens of Buckhannon attended to share their ideas and reports.

Jody Light presented the tentative plans for an “Almost Heaven BBQ Rib Bash” to be held on May 1 at the Peak Pavilion and Bicentennial Inn in Buckhannon. The one-day event would offer food and activities for all ages. In addition to competitive BBQ teams, the event would also host a cornhole tournament, Bingo and live music. The Consolidated Public Works Board approved Light’s inquiry, scheduling a presentation to City Council on April 1 to approve the event.

Jerry Henderson from Buckhannon-Upshur Retail Merchants Association (BURMA) addressed the Board requesting strengthened security on Main Street in Buckhannon. After surveying several businesses in the area, BURMA suggested additional lighting, more security cameras, and the installation of an Emergency Call Box on Main Street. Henderson said these measures would help ensure the safety of not only the citizens, but also the business owners in the area. The request was heeded by the Board and will appear on the agenda of the next City Council meeting.

Laura Meadows suggested a community volunteer cleaning day for the River Walk near West Virginia Wesleyan College. She added that the equipment, benches and picnic tables need some “TLC” and that the area could benefit from community assistance. The inquiry was presented to Public Works Director Jerry Arnold, who ensured Meadows that spring maintenance will soon take place in the parks. Meadows will continue to plan a possible cleaning day for any local volunteers interested in helping.

The City of Buckhannon also received three bids for 2021 Cemetery Mowing, taking place from April 5 through October 21, amounting to 26 total mows. Before awarding the lowest bid, Arnold will evaluate each company and inquiry. The discussion and decision process will continue to the next City Council meeting.

Amberle Jenkins discussed the Consolidated Public Works portion of the 2021-2022 FY General Funds budget. After briefly outlining revenues, expenditures and transfers, the Board passed the budget report as presented.

Several items presented during this meeting will be discussed and voted on during the next City Council meeting on April 1 at 7:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers.
