Post 7 uses big third inning to get past Summersville Post 131, 6-3

Trey Leigh of Buckhannon Post 7 flashes a smile between innings after hitting a two-run home run that gave Buckhannon the lead in the third inning of their American Legion Area V contest Sunday afternoon. Leigh also threw out to runners trying to steal as Buckhannon won a 6-3 verdict. Post 7 improved to 9-10 on the season.

HICO – A huge third inning allowed the Buckhannon Post 7 Legionnaires to cruise to a 6-3 win over Summersville Post 131 here Sunday in an Area V contest.

A five-run third inning, highlighted by Trey Leigh’s two-run home run and Brady Hurst’s two-run single, gave Buckhannon all the offense they needed as they upped their winning streak to two games.

Casey Hamner did the rest on the mound pitching a complete game to improve his record to 2-1.

He gave up just two earned runs on six hits and struck out seven.

“The pitching is coming around,” remarked Buckhannon Post 7 general manager Kevin Boring. “We have had to use several guys a little more because we have had some guys with some soreness that we are working through. Our self-scout over July 4th has helped identify which guys we need to look at and their consistency has improved.”

Leigh also contributed to the win via his defense as he threw out two would-be base stealers from his catcher’s position.

The win gave Boring’s club a 9-10 record overall and a 5-2 Area V mark.

Summersville took the lead in the bottom of the second when Colton Ferrell doubled home Hunter Lester.

Following that, it was time for Buckhannon to take over the game with their big third inning.

Alek Seech started the inning with a single and swiped second base.

He scored on a double by Nick Calef-Boring to make it a 1-1 game.

Leigh then stepped to the plate and crushed a pitch over the left-center field fence to treat Post 7 to a 3-1 lead.

With two outs in the inning, Zach White got the inning going again with a single and Ryan Smith followed with a single and Hunter Stone loaded the bases with a walk.

Hurst then crushed a single bringing home White and Smith to give Post 7 a 5-1 lead.

Post 7 made it a 6-1 contest in the top of the fourth when Seech singled, went to second on an error and scored on a single by Hamner.

Hamner ran into a little bit of trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning as Summersville scored two runs behind a two-run single by Bradie Vance and a Post 7 error to close the gap to 6-3, but Hamner never let Post 31 get any closer than three runs.

Buckhannon collected 14 hits in the win with Calef-Boring leading the way with three while Seech, White and Stone each picked up two hits.

Ferrell led Summersville’s offense with two hits.

William Wiseman started the game for Post 131 and absorbed the loss going 2 2/3 innings.

He gave up five earned runs on eight hits.

“We have talked a lot with these guys about not giving up,” stated Boring. “We have several older guys that are being good leaders which is rubbing off on the younger ones. We are just trying to take it one at-bat at a time and not trying to think too far ahead. We are doing a good job overall with that approach.”

Buckhannon was slated to visit Kingwood on Tuesday.

On, Wednesday, they will return to action when they travel to Weston and play Post 4 in an Area V contest starting at 6:30 p.m.

Post 7 will wrap up their regular season Friday hosting Garrett County (Md.) Post 71/214 at 7 p.m.
