Post 7 takes runner-up honors in Area V Tournament

PHILIPPI – Buckhannon Post 7 were runners-up in the 2018 American Legion Area V two-day tournament held at Philip Barbour High School Thursday and Friday evenings.

With a rainout of day one of the tournament on Wednesday, the tournament was squeezed into two days forcing Buckhannon to play four games in a 30-hour period.

Buckhannon played in every game of the three-team double elimination tournament as they earned a 2-2 record.

Buckhannon beat Jane Lew 8-7, but dropped an 11-1 contest to Elkins on Thursday.

On Friday, Post 7 beat Jane Lew again, 14-5, but lost once again in the championship to Elkins, 11-4.

The first game of the tournament for Buckhannon on Thursday against Jane Lew Post 166 was a back-and-fourth affair.

Buckhannon scored first in the bottom of the first when Logan Bailey drew a lead-off walk, stole second, went on third on a fly out and scored on wild pitch.

Jane Lew took their first lead in the top of the second on a two-run home run by Luke White.

Buckhannon countered with four runs in their half of the second. Hunter Stone drew a bases loaded walk for the first run and Nick Calef-Boring crushed a one-out three-run double down the left field line to treat Buckhannon to a 5-2 lead.

Jane Lew came right back and scored three in the top of the third to deadlock the game at 5-5.

Buckhannon regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Taylor Whitehair scored Bailey with an infield single and Cole Hoover singled home Calef-Boring to give Post 7 a 7-5 advantage.

Collin Moneypenny drove home a run for Jane Lew in the fifth and White had an RBI single in the sixth as Post 166 tied the game again at 7-7, but Buckhannon minimized the damage in both innings as Jane Lew left the bases loaded both times.

Buckhannon won the game with a run in the top of the sixth.

Calef-Boring started the frame with a walk, went to second on a single by Casey Hamner, stole third and raced home on an overthrow on the stolen base.

Whitehair, who came onto pitch in the sixth inning, set Jane Lew down in order in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Buckhannon had eight hits in the win as Bailey and Calef-Boring each had multi-hit games to pace the offense.

Whitehair earned the win in relief to improve his record to 1-2. He pitched two innings and didn’t allow a run on one hit.

Forced to play a fresh Elkins team in the winner’s bracket game, Buckhannon mustered just six hits against a very good pitching performance from Post 29’s Matt Gainer.

The game was scoreless after two innings, but Elkins chased across four runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Buckhannon’s lone run occurred in the fourth inning when Whitehair started the canto with an infield single, moved to second on a single by Hoover, advanced to third on a blooper by Trey Leigh and scored on a single by Drew Heatherly.

Elkins scored two more in the fourth, fifth and three more in the sixth as the game was halted in the sixth on the 10-run mercy rule.

Heatherly had the lone multi-hit game for Post 7 as he collected two hits.

Zach White (1-1) started the game on the mound for Buckhannon and gave up five hits and struck out one in 3 1/3 innings of work.

Friday’s first game was an elimination game between Buckhannon and Jane Lew and it was all Buckhannon.

With the game scoreless heading into the bottom of the third, Buckhannon erupted for six runs as they sent 10 batters to the plate.

Alek Seech, Hamner, Heatherly and Leigh each had an RBI for Buckhannon in the inning as they also scored twice on a pair of Jane Lew errors.

Buckhannon put the game out of reach in the fourth of the fourth with a seven-run outburst with the benefit of only three hits.

Hamner, Heatherly and Leigh each had an RBI as Post 7 capitalized on three errors, three walks, two wild pitches, a passed ball and a hit batsman in the inning.

Buckhannon was never able to end the game on the mercy rule as Jane Lew rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth inning to continue the contest as Buckhannon still head a 13-5 lead.

Post 7 wrapped up the scoring in the bottom of the fifth after Seech smacked a lead-off double to the gap in left field and scored on Calef-Boring’s single to center.

Bailey, Seech, Calef-Boring and Heatherly each had two hits to pace Buckhannon’s 10-hit attack.

Buckhannon swiped 10 bases in the win with Bailey and Calef-Boring each stealing three apiece.

Hamner improved his record to 3-0 on the mound starting the game and going 4 1/3 innings. He gave up six hits and struck out three.

Hoover tossed 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for Post 7 giving up just two hits and fanning three.

Following the elimination game, Buckhannon struck first in the championship game against Elkins.

Bailey started the game with a single to short and later scored on a single by Calef-Boring.

Elkins though took control of the game from a tired Buckhannon team as they scored four in the first and two more in the second for a 6-1 lead.

Elkins added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth for an 8-1 lead.

Buckhannon kept battling as they scored twice in the top of the sixth. Hunter Stone scored on an error and Brandon Wamsley drew a bases loaded walk to make it an 8-3 game.

Elkins extended their lead to 11-3 with a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Buckhannon wrapped up the scoring with a run in the top of the seventh when Hoover singled home Stone.

Seech had two of Buckhannon’s six hits in the setback.

Bailey (4-5) suffered the loss on the mound for Buckhannon going five innings. He gave up nine hits and struck out five.

Elkins (22-16-2) will now advance to the state tournament next Wednesday at St. Albans High School. Buckhannon wrapped up their season with a 13-10-1 record.
