Post 7 suffers a pair of late losses to Elkins and Kingwood

Buckhannon Post 7’s Connor Johnson (22) delivers a pitch during the third inning of their contest with Elkins Post 29 Friday night at William E. Phillips Memorial Field. Johnson pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up just two earned runs but Post 7 dropped a 7-2 decision.

TENNERTON – One thing that Buckhannon Post 7 manger Kevin Boring wanted to improve upon from the Buckhannon-Upshur high school baseball season was closing out games.

Unfortunately for Boring, that trend carried over this weekend as Post 7 lost a pair of games late to Elkins Post 29 and Kingwood Post 56 on Friday and Sunday.

On Friday at home with Elkins, the game was tied 2-2 going into the final inning, but Post 7 dropped a 7-2 decision.

On Sunday at Kingwood, the game was tied at 3-3 going into the bottom of the sixth inning and Post 7 lost that one by a 5-3 score.

They did salvage the weekend with a 15-1 victory over Kingwood in the nightcap of the doubleheader against the Post 56 Junior Legion team.

They made the trip to Charleston for a doubleheader on Saturday with Post 65 but those two games got rained out as game one only made it to the top of the fifth inning where Buckhannon was trailing by an 8-0 score.

The action left Post 7 with a 3-8 record heading into Monday’s contest with the Grafton Junior Legion team.

Against Elkins, Post 29 took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but Post 7 tied it with a run in the bottom of the third when Jay Burnside doubled to center field, went to third on a passed ball and scored on an Elkins error.

Post 29 took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth but Buckhannon answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning when Hunter Stone led off with a double to center, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.

In the top of the seventh, Elkins scored five runs, of which just two were earned, on just two hits while capitalizing on a Post 7 error and five walks.

Both teams had just four hits in the contest.

Burnside paced the Buckhannon offense with two.

Connor Johnson (0-4) pitched well in the loss going 6 2/3 innings and allowing just two earned runs on two hits while striking out six.

Against Kingwood in game one, Post 7 took a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first behind a one-run double by Elijah Bryant and he later scored on a Kingwood miscue.

Kingwood scored three runs in their half of the inning making it a 3-2 game.

Buckhannon tied it in the top of the fifth at 3-3 when Zach Calef Boring scored on a ground out by Ian Donnen.

Preston scored the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs on two walks, two passed balls and a one-run double by Byron Brandt.

Post 7 collected six hits with Calef-Boring getting two.

Zach White (0-1) was charged with the loss tossing the final 1 2/3 innings of the game allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks.

In the finale on Sunday, Buckhannon  took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first.

Brayden Hamer hit a two-run double, Cam Tenney hit a one-run single, Peyton Bennett hit a one-run double and later scored on an error to account for the scoring.

Buckhannon chased across seven runs in the top of the third with the big hit belonging to Donnen, a three-run double.

Preston scored their lone run in the bottom of the third making it a 12-1 game.

Tucker Burr hit a one-run single for Post 7 in the top of the fourth making it a 13-1 contest and Hamer scored on an error and Josh Nesbitt hit a one-run single in the top of the fifth to wrap up the scoring as the game was called on the 10-run mercy rule.

Post 7 had 15 hits with Hamer and Bennett each getting three.

Nesbitt (2-1) started the game to get the win.

He pitched two scoreless innings striking out five.

Post 7 will be back in action today hosting Clarksburg Post 13 at 7 p.m.

They will visit Elkins Post 29 Wednesday at 7 p.m.
