Post 7 gets first win beating Kingwood, tumbles to Clarksburg Post 13

Landon Marple (10) of Buckhannon Post 7 gets ready to take a swing against Kingwood Post 56’s Junior Legion team Monday at William E. Phillips Memorial Field. Marple hit a double and scored two runs in Post 7’s 13-1 win.

CLARKSBURG – The Buckhannon Post 7 Legionnaires picked up their first win of the season Monday at home hosting the Kingwood Post 56 Junior Legion team by a 13-1 score in five innings of action.

To give the contest a more competitive feel,  Post 7 general manger Kevin Boring used only his younger players in the contest.

Buckhannon followed that win up with a trip to Clarksburg on Tuesday where they dropped a 16-9 decision to Clarksburg Post 13.

Their outing with Bridgeport on Wednesday was rained out.

The action left Post 7 with a 1-4 record.

In the win on Monday, Post 7 raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning with Cam Tenney and Isaac Lane each knocking in a run,  Landon Marple scoring on an error and Clint Crites and Ryan Snyder on a wild pitch.

Post 7 made it a 7-0 game with a pair of runs in the top of the second when Brayden Hamer hit a one-run triple and  Elijah Bryant hit a one-run single.

Preston scored their lone run in the top of the third making it a 7-1 contest but Post 7 scored four more times in the bottom of the third for an 11-1 lead

They capitalized on a pair of Kingwood errors and one-run singles by Bryant and Tucker Burr.

Buckhannon wrapped up the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch and a Kingwood error.

Post 7 had seven hits in the win with Tenney leading the way with two.

Josh Nesbitt (1-1) started the game and earned the win, pitching two scoreless innings.

In Tuesday’s game with Clarksburg, Post 13 was guilty of 10 errors in the contest.

Post 7 took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first when Brady Hurst hit a ground out RBI, Tenney scored on a ball misplayed off the bat of Lane and then Lane scored the third run on an error from a ball hit by Peyton Bennett.

Clarksburg took the lead in their half of the first with four runs with the big hit being a three-run home run by Tanner Cook.

Post 7 tied the game in the top of the second at 4-4 when Stone scored on an error after a single by Hurst.

Clarksburg tallied a run in the bottom of the second and third innings for a 6-4 lead but Post 7 responded with a four-run fourth inning for an 8-6 lead.

Hurst hit a one-run single, Lane had a fielder’s choice RBI, an error led to the third run and Lane had a steal of home on a double steal and error for the fourth run.

Things fell apart for Post 7 in the bottom of the fourth inning as Clarksburg chased across eight runs for a 14-8 advantage and they added one more in the fifth and sixth innings for a 16-8 lead.

Post 7 scored the game’s final run in the top of the seventh when Zach White singled and scored on another error.

Post 7 had seven hits with Tenney, Hurst and White each getting two.

Hurst (0-1) suffered the loss going three innings.

“We really had that one bad inning, the fourth inning,” remarked Boring. “We are still making some small strides. We are a young team. This isn’t going to happen overnight.”

Buckhannon will return to action Friday visiting South Charleston Post 94 at St. Albans High School.

First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
