Post 7 falls in seventh inning to Braxton County Post 33, 7-5

Buckhannon Post 7’s Isaac Lane struck out 12 batters and allowed just three hits in five innings of work but had a no-decision against Braxton County Post 33 Tuesday in a 7-5 setback. Lane was also a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI.

TENNERTON – Buckhannon Post 7 saw a two-run seventh inning lead evaporate at the hands of Braxton County Post 33 in an American Legion contest Tuesday evening at William E. Phillips Memorial Field.

Post 7 owned a 5-3 advantage heading into the seventh inning, but committed two costly errors and gave up four unearned runs in a 7-5 setback.

Post 7 was their own worst enemy in the game, leaving 10 runners stranded including leaving them loaded in the second inning when they managed just one run and stranding a pair of runners in the fifth and sixth innings.

“I was disappointed to not hold the lead in the last inning but really that was set up by several things throughout the game,” stated Buckhannon Post 7 manager Kevin Boring. “We aren't doing well with some of the little things. Many of those things go unnoticed by the casual fan. We can’t continue to miss signs, not hit our cuts, not communicating when the other teams  baserunners break to steal, and not staying disciplined in our approach at the plate.  When you add up those little things over and over throughout the game big problems arise. The good part is those things are all correctable. The players know these things. The coaching staff is just looking for nine guys to be accountable and play with grit no matter the situation.”

Braxton County took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but Post 7 cut that lead in half in the bottom of the second when Zach White uncorked a double to left field bringing home courtesy runner Elijah Bryant.

Braxton County scored an unearned run in the top of the third for a 3-1 lead but Buckhannon tied it with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a one-run double from Lane and a one-run single from Landon Marple.

Post 7 took their first lead in the bottom of the fourth when Cam Tenney smashed a triple to center field and scored on a ground out by Peyton Bennett.

Buckhannon upped their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Marple walked and later scored on a passed ball making it a 5-3 game.

The contest stayed at 5-3 until the top of the seventh.

Braxton County had the bottom of the line-up to begin the inning and those three batters were a combined 0-for-5 but all three reached base. The big hit of the inning for Braxton County was a two-run single by Gary Hess as Post 33 chased across four unearned runs for a 7-5 lead.

Tenney hit a two-out single for Post 7 in the bottom of the seventh was left stranded at first base.

The loss wasted a nice pitching effort from Lane who struck out 12 batters in five innings of work. He gave up just two earned runs on three hits.

Nate Curello was tagged with the loss as he didn’t allow an earned run on six hits while striking out three.

Lane led Post 7 at the plate going a perfect 3-for-3 while Tenney added two hits.

“I thought Lane had a nice game,” stated Boring. “We talked about him taking control and making adjustments when he's out there on the mound. After the first inning he did that and turned in probably his best outing this season. He was also a plus at the plate. We made some minor tweaks there and it paid off. We need him to be one of our go to guys this season.”

The loss dropped Post 7 to 1-6 going into Wednesday’s game with Kingwood Post 56.

Buckhannon Post 7 will host Bridgeport Post 68 today at 7 p.m. and Elkins Post 29 Friday at 7 p.m.
