Post 7 ends season in Area V Tournament

Buckhannon Post 7’s Peyton Bennett makes a throw in from left field during their game with Elkins on Wednesday at William E. Phillips Memorial Field. Post 7 dropped a 9-3 decision.

TENNERTON – In one of the weirdest starts to an American Legion Area Tournament in recent memory, a team was removed from the three-team double elimination tournament that started on Monday.

Buckhannon and Braxton County were squaring off in the tournament opener when between half innings in the sixth, it was discovered that Braxton had an illegal player on their roster not approved by the state board.

Braxton had to forfeit the game to Buckhannon, which they were losing by a 6-0 score and were expelled from the rest of the tournament.

That then left Buckhannon to face Elkins in a best of three series for the remainder of the week, with the first game moving to Elkins based on an agreement between Buckhannon Post 7 manager Kevin Boring and Elkins Post 29 head coach Phil Wilson prior to the tournament in the event Braxton didn’t field a team.

Unfortunately for Post 7, they couldn’t get over the hump against Elkins as they dropped their first game against them Tuesday at Robin Harvey Memorial Field in a 12-1 five-inning contest and then lost a 9-3 decision Wednesday with the game being held at Buckhannon’s William E. Phillips Memorial Field.

In Monday’s opener with Braxton, Post 7 jumped into a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.

Hunter Stone started the inning with a walk and Zach Calef-Boring followed by reaching on an error.

Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Stone scored on a sacrifice fly by Isaac Lane. Lane’s sacrifice fly was misplayed allowing Calef-Boring to score and letting Lane scamper all the way to third base on the miscue.

Zach White hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Lane giving Post 7 their 3-0 lead.

The game stayed at 3-0 when Lane hit a three-run double scoring Clint Crites, Stone and Brady Hurst making it a 6-0 contest.

The game was then called after the top of the sixth inning.

Buckhannon had six hits with Calef-Boring and Lane each getting two.

Elijah Bryant picked up the win throwing 2 2/3 innings of relief.

He didn’t allow a run on two hits while striking out three.

Connor Johnson started the game and went 2 1/3 innings not surrendering a run while allowing two hits and fanning three.

In Tuesday’s game, Buckhannon scored their lone run in the top second trailing 1-0 when Cam Tenney doubled home Crites making it a 1-1 game.

Elkins produced seven runs in the bottom of the second making it an 8-1 game.

They went on to score one in the third and three in the fourth upping their lead to 12-1 and ending the game in the fifth on the mercy rule.

Buckhannon had more errors (four) than hits (three) in the loss.

Stone, Brayden Hamer and Tenney had Post 7’s three hits.

Lane (0-1) suffered the loss in the start going 1 1/3 innings giving up seven earned runs on four hits and five walks while fanning three.

In Wednesday’s game with Elkins, Post 29 scored three times in the top of third and twice more in the top of the fourth for a 5-0 advantage.

Post 7 scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fifth on a base-clearing double by Lane that brought home Crites, Calef-Boring and Hurst.

Post 7 though couldn’t get any closer than 5-3 as Elkins scored a run in the top of the sixth and added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

Both teams had seven hits as Calef-Boring, Hurst, Lane, White, Tenney Bryant and Crites each had a hit for Post 7.

Johnson (0-7) suffered the loss in the start going 5 1/3 innings and allowing five earned runs on five hits while walking five and fanning seven.

Buckhannon ended their year with a 6-13 mark while Elkins will advance to the state tournament beginning next week in Wheeling.
