Post 7 earns split with Grafton and Clarksburg in Legion action

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon Post 7 Legionnaires split a pair of home games on Monday and Tuesday at William E. Phillips Memorial Field.

On Monday, the younger members of the team beat Grafton’s Junior Legion team by a 10-5 score in a game halted in the bottom of the fifth by lightning.

On Tuesday, Post 7 dropped a 10-0 decision to Clarksburg Post 13 in a game that was stopped after five innings on the 10-run mercy rule.

In Monday’s game, Post 7 trailed by a 4-0 margin after the top of the first but chased across three runs in their half of the first.

Landon Marple drew a walk and Cam Tenney hit a single and both scored when a ball hit by Clint Crites was misplayed. Crites later scored on an error on a bunt single by Brayden Hamer.

Grafton scored a run in the top of the second for a 5-3 lead but Buckhannon countered with three more runs in the bottom of the second.

Marple hit a two-run double and later scored on an error as Buckhannon took a 6-5 lead.

Buckhannon made it 8-5 in the bottom of the third when Josh Nesbitt hit a sacrifice fly that scored Ryan Snyder who had hit a triple and Marple hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Ian Donnen who had earlier reached on a single.

Buckhannon tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth before the lightning strikes called off the game.

Marple hit a two-run single that scored Elijah Bryant and Zach Calef-Boring.

Post 7 had 10 hits with Marple, Hamer and Snyder each getting two.

Crites (1-0) pitched four innings to get the win.

He gave up five earned runs on six hits while striking out four.

Nesbitt pitched a scoreless fifth inning.

Buckhannon never gave themselves a chance to stay in the ball game with Clarksburg on Tuesday.

Post 7 made five errors in the first two innings which allowed Clarksburg to take a 6-0 lead.

Clarksburg added a run in the third and finished off Post 7 with three more in the top of the fifth.

Post 7 had seven errors overall in the game.

They managed just three hits off of Clarksburg starter Justin Herrod.

Zach White collected two of the three hits while Jay Burnside had the other.

Brady Hurst (1-2) suffered the loss.

He went two innings and gave up just two earned runs on five hits while striking out one in the start.

The action left Post 7 with a 4-9 record heading into Wednesday’s road battle with Elkins Post 29.

They will face Braxton County Post 33 on the road today at 7 p.m. and will wrap up the regular season Friday at Garrett County (Md.) for a 7 p.m. start.

Buckhannon Post 7 will host the Area V Tournament beginning on Monday.
