Poor first quarter hurts Buccaneer freshmen in 66-40 home setback to Tigers

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur freshmen Buccaneers were never able to overcome a rough first quarter in a 66-40 setback to the Elkins Tigers Monday evening.

The Bucs only scored one point in the opening quarter and were forced to play catch-up the rest of the way.

The lone point for the Bucs in that first quarter came from a free throw by Shawn Blandino.

They trailed after one quarter by an 8-1 margin.

The Bucs cranked it up in the second quarter winning it by an 18-13 margin.

Keyton Lenier scored five points, Blandino and Ryan Snyder four each, Zade Woody dropped in a trey and Josh Nesbitt two for the Bucs in the second quarter, but they still trailed by a 21-19 score at the break.

The Bucs couldn’t slow Elkins down in the third quarter as they lost the frame by a 26-11 score.

Mark Hurst had five points, Snyder four and Blandino two in the third quarter for Buckhannon-Upshur.

That left them down by a 47-30 score heading into the fourth quarter.

Elkins won the fourth quarter by a 19-10 score with Hurst scoring five, Gage Raschella and Blandino two each and Snyder one for the Bucs.

Hurst led the B-U offense with 10 points while Blandino had nine.

The loss dropped the Bucs to 3-2 on the season.

They were slated to play East Fairmont Wednesday and will return to the court today hosting Lincoln at 4:30 p.m.
