Pool opens for summer season with upgraded amenities

BUCKHANNON — The Upshur County Swimming Pool is now open to the public, and the pool director recently highlighted changes that will be available to pool goers this summer. Director Seth Blake said he hopes county residents will be pleased with the updates at the recreational facility.
“It is the county pool and I feel that we have done the best that we can to give the county something they can be proud of,” Blake said.
One of the most notable changes is the hours. Swimmers can now spend another hour splashing around because the pool opens at 11:30 a.m. and closes at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Hours run from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The pool opened for the season Saturday, May 27, and Blake said guests have appreciated the new umbrellas and chairs that stretch around the pool, which gives them a good spot to utilize the new free WiFi the pool offers.
Local resident Jennifer Frye said she appreciates the changes because her family uses the pool so often during the summer.
“I have been coming to this pool for almost 13 years and I have never been happier with it,” Frye said. “We come here almost every day and I love how the umbrellas offer more shade and the chairs just give everyone a place to be.”
The final big change is the reopening of the concession stand, which Blake said is back by popular demand.
“I am very lucky to have [county] commissioners who listen to the public and who have really taken the initiative to make sure the changes we have made are what the public wanted,” Blake said.
The concession stand offers the usual snacks like hotdogs, candy and water, but this summer it also offers Zul’s Frozen Lemonade.
The pool is also offering a range of activities, such as group swimming lessons Monday through Friday from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Blake said he hopes the group sessions attract a lot of students.
“I am a big advocate for swimming education,” Blake said. “I believe that swimming education saves lives, and I think the more kids we can impact, the better.”
Water aerobics are offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m.,  and lap swimming is available from 8 to 9 a.m.
Lifeguard Cody Helm said the atmosphere of the pool is what makes it such a good spot in the summer.
“I love the atmosphere here, the lifeguard and management staff are all like a family,” Helm said. “The people who come here love to come, and I like being in that kind of environment. It’s the best first job you could have.”
