Petrovic scores 31 but Wesleyan falls to Yellow Jackets in OT, 97-87


INSTITUTE – Luka Petrovic scored 31 points and added seven assists while Dusan Vicentic had a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds but it wasn’t enough to lead the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats to a victory Thursday night against West Virginia State in a Mountain East Conference contest.

Wesleyan dropped a hard-fought 97-87 decision in overtime.

Wesleyan trailed for most of the second half but Petrovic came up big in the final minute with a clutch three-pointer tying the game at 79-79 with 40 seconds remaining.

West Virginia State held for the final shot but Anthony Pittman’s three-pointer was off the mark.

Wesleyan, however, couldn’t get it going in the overtime period getting outscored by 10 points.

The loss ended Wesleyan’s two-game winning streak.

It left Wesleyan with a 9-14 record overall and an 8-9 ledger in the MEC.

Wesleyan took an early 5-0 lead after a three-pointer by Petrovic and pushed their lead out to seven points following a lay-up by Ross Young, at 11-4, with 3:29 gone in the game.

West Virginia State went on a 9-0 run for a 13-11 lead with 14:30 remaining in the half.

Wesleyan tied the game back up at 15-15, but the Yellow Jackets went on another run, this one a 7-0 run for a 22-15 game at the 10:55 mark.

Over the next three minutes, Wesleyan countered with an 8-0 run retaking the lead at 23-22.

A tip in by John Dawson returned the lead back to the Yellow Jackets but Wesleyan went on a 14-0 run capped off by Vicentic scoring a lay-up to treat Wesleyan to a 37-24 lead with 3:38 left in the half.

The Yellow Jackets closed the half on a 7-0 run to cut the Wesleyan advantage to six, at 37-31.

A three-pointer by Petrovic kept Wesleyan ahead by seven, at 45-38, with 2:12 gone in the second half.

A 13-4 run by West Virginia State gave the Yellow Jackets the lead back, at 51-49, with 13:48 remaining.

The two teams would ping-pong the lead back and forth over the next two minutes before the Yellow Jackets settled into the lead for the remainder of the half.

Their biggest lead was six points following a three-pointer by Glen Abram, at 68-62, with seven minutes left.

Wesleyan was still down by five points at the three-minute mark, but Petrovic drove the lane for a lay-up and came back with a short jumper to put the Bobcats down by just one, at 77-76, with 1:54 remaining.

A pair of free throws by Pittman put West Virginia State up by three before Petrovic hit his game-tying shot.

The Yellow Jackets opened up an 85-81 lead in overtime before Todd hit a three-pointer making it an 85-84 game with 3:38 left in the extra session.

The Yellow Jackets went on an 8-0 run before Todd scored a three-pointer to make it a 93-87 game with 32 seconds left.

The Yellow Jackets secured the game at the free throw in the final 30 seconds.

West Virginia State put four players in double digits with Abram leading the way with 33 points while Pittman added 26 points and 13 rebounds.

West Virginia State improved to 16-6 overall and 9-14 in the MEC.

Wesleyan will return to action today when they host the University of Charleston at 4 p.m.
