TENNERTON — The undefeated Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers Peewee Football team suffered their first loss of the season Saturday, November 5, after racking up an impressive 9 victories. Ultimately, Bridgeport would escape with a 21-20 playoff win after stopping a hard-fought, second half comeback by the Bucs, that would end championship hopes.
Bridgeport opened the first half with a dominant offensive rushing attack that ended Buckhannon-Upshur’s defensive streak of keeping opponents scoreless throughout the season, which had extended to 311-0 after their win against Summersville. Bridgeport would go on to dominate the first half 21-0, but the momentum had shifted.
The Bucs started their second half comeback, which would be highlighted by a 70-yard touchdown run with 5 minutes remaining in the game, that would bring the score within 7. Impressively, the Bucs would get back to their roots of hard nose defense, that was the story of their season, by keeping Bridgeport to a scoreless half, forcing a turnover that would lead to their final possession and drive their last successful play. The miraculous comeback, however, would be halted, when B-U was unable to convert a PAT after a touchdown with just 1:00 left in the fourth quarter, that brought the lead to just a single point, sealing the victory for Bridgeport and ending an emotionally charged run and the impressive season put together by Head Coach Shawn Grubb, his staff and their team.
After the game, Grubb highlighted his feeling on the team saying, “I couldn’t be prouder. We just got surprised in the end.” The loss certainly isn’t the end, as the future of Buckhannon-Upshur Football looks bright for years to come and highlighting teamwork, as the key to success.
Congratulations to the Buckhannon-Upshur Peewee Football team on a noteworthy season, headlined by dedication and hard work.
