Peewee Bucs dominate Summersville, move to last round of playoffs

Coaches huddle with the Little Bucs after dominating Summersville 33-0.

TENNERTON — To say that the 8 to 10-year-old girls and boys of the #1-seeded Peewee Buccaneers Football team, coached by Shawn Grubb, have put together an impressive 2022 campaign would be a massive understatement, as the team had outscored opponents 278 to 0 entering their opening round playoff rematch with Summersville back on Saturday, October 29.

The Little Buccaneers had just beaten Summersville in their regular season finale a week earlier on Saturday, October 23, by a final score of 45-0. Despite having every reason to be confident entering the game, it was clear Coach Grubb and his staff, consisting of assistants Aaron Grubb, Scott Baron, Cody Clem, Josh Moore, Bub Small, Dustin Tenney, Sloan Baisden and Eric Davis, did not underestimate or overlook their opponents as the Peewee Buccaneers looked sharp and ready to play pregame.

The Peewee Buccaneers overwhelmed Summersville for the second straight weekend, as a deep backfield, explosive rushing attack and suffocating defense carried the day en route to another shutout win by the score of 33 to 0 last Saturday.

It was a full-team effort for the Peewee Buccaneers, as their offense came out of the gates quick, establishing a first solid first half lead before a scary injury to one of the young Summersville players halted the game for a time, with both teams waiting in the locker-room for the player to be escorted off the field via stretcher/ambulance.

After taking the field and warming back up with the game well in hand already, the Peewee Buccaneers coasted in the second half, playing conservatively on offense and bleeding the clock, while focusing on holding Summersville out of the end zone defensively. Late in the game, Summersville broke into scoring territory with a long run down their sideline, however the Little Buccaneers answered the call defensively, quickly forcing a turnover on downs in the red zone to keep their season long shutout intact. Summersville never threatened again and Coach Grubb was content to bleed out the rest of the clock and turn his focus to their next challenge.

With the 33 to 0 shutout win, the Peewee Buccaneers have now outscored opponents 311-0 this season. Coach Grubb and his staff will now turn their attention to their second round match-up as the Peewee Buccaneers continue their championship chase. Come out to Buckhannon-Upshur High School as Buckhannon’s amazing team takes on Bridgeport for the last playoff game. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. Good luck Peewee Bucs! Buckhannon is very proud of you all!
