Parke scores 24 as Lady Bucs down Lewis County in overtime, 63-56

Buckhannon-Upshur freshman Gabby Parke (11) scored a game-high 24 points to help lead the Lady Bucs to a 63-56 overtime win against Lewis County Tuesday evening at the high school.

TENNERTON – For the second time in three games, the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs have gone into an overtime period.

And both times, they came out and dominated the extra session to record a win.

Last week it was against Bridgeport, this time it was against the Lewis County Minutemaids in a home encounter Tuesday night at the high school gym.

The win was fueled by not only a dominant overtime period, but by the two Lady Buc freshmen – Gabby Parke and Kenna Maxwell.

The duo combined for 40 of B-U’s 63 points as Parke put in a game-high 24 points while Maxwell chipped in with 16.

The Lady Bucs were down by six, at 42-36, with 3 ½ minutes left to play in regulation.

That is when McKenzie Reynolds made a basket in the paint and Parke reeled off five straight points to give the Bucs a 43-42 lead with two minutes remaining.

Lewis County scored four straight points to take the lead back, at 46-43, with 1:35 remaining.

Maxwell scored on a lay-up and Kendall Currence gave the lead back to the Lady Bucs with a lay-up at 47-46, with 37 seconds remaining.

Emma Starett was fouled with 20 seconds and made both crucial free throws giving Lewis County a 48-47 advantage.

Reynolds was hacked with 10 seconds remaining and went to the line for two free throws.

She couldn’t convert either shot, but Samargo got the rebound on the second shot and was fouled in the process.

She missed the first but drained the second one to tie the game at 48-48.

Lewis County’s Emma Cayton drove the lane as time expired, but she couldn’t get her lay-up attempt to go down.

From there, the Lady Bucs took control of the game in the overtime period scoring the first six points behind a lay-up and two free throws from Parke and two free throws from Samargo.

Olivia Krinov made two free throws for Lewis County making it a 54-50 game, but the Lady Bucs went on a 5-0 run behind a free throw and lay-up by Maxwell and a short jumper by Parke extending B-U’s lead to 59-50 with a minute left.

B-U put the game away in the final minute going a perfect four-for-four at the free throw line.

“We just play with tremendous heart,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Rob Kittle. “I really thought the last four minutes of regulation and the four minutes of overtime were the first time in the game we played unselfish basketball. We shared the ball and played great defense during that time span.”

The Lady Bucs forced Lewis County into 26 turnovers during the game recording 21 steals with McDaniels and Maxwell each getting a team-high five.

Lewis County, who dropped to 6-9 on the season, was led by Starett and her 16 points.

The Lady Bucs are now on a three-game winning streak which is even more impressive considering the fact that Kittle is doing it with a six-man rotation with reserve forward/center Kiara Woods sidelined with an injury.

“Our depth is currently a concern,” stated Kittle. “We play Elkins Thursday and then our sectional game is Wednesday, we will probably just have a light walk through Friday and then give them the weekend off and try to save our legs. It’s tough playing with six.”

As Kittle said, the Lady Bucs (7-5) will wrap up their regular season today at Elkins with a 7:30 tip and then will host Preston in the sectional opener Wednesday at 7 p.m.
