OUR House opens in Buckhannon

BUCKHANNON — With a board of persistent volunteers and a community of sponsors, the One Unique Recovery House (OUR House) was made possible in Buckhannon.

On 34 Hart Avenue, OUR House opened its doors to provide refuge, safety, and support to women in recovery. The house is not a homeless shelter or rescue mission—it serves as a recovery home for adult females with alcohol and/or drug addictions. Opened as a non-profit social service, OUR House is open to serve all women of West Virginia.

The program is intended for women coming out of substance abuse treatment facilities or correctional institutions. When they apply to stay at OUR House, they will undergo a 12-Step recovery program, all while being provided room and board, meals, transportation, job placement assistance, recreational and social activity opportunities, individual and group counseling, drug and alcohol testing, educational training, and so much more. Most importantly, the women here will be surrounded by other women looking for a mutual support system.

President of the OUR House Board, Linda Mealey explained, “Recovery happens here. It’s our mission to help these women become contributors to society again. They get their kids back—they really learn to grow. It’s unique—we don’t accept anything with medication-assisted treatments; it’s a completely abstinence-based program. We’re an all-volunteer board; most of us are in recovery ourselves.”

One of the most unique parts? The OUR House Board had to pay for little to nothing. The community, local and beyond, donated all the tools and amenities needed to help the organization provide help for women in need. Lowe’s, Star Furniture, AF Wendlings, and Appalachian Glass are just a few of the nearly 100 sponsorships the Board gives their thanks to. With their help and utilities, OUR House became a reality. The Board encourages women facing addiction to, “come be a part of our family and the miracles recovery has to offer.”
