O’Shields earns two wins as Lady ‘Cats sweep Frostburg State in road twin bill

FROSTBURG (Md.) – Abigail O’Shields pitched both ends of a doubleheader for the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats against the Frostburg State Bobcats Tuesday afternoon coming away with two wins at Bobcat Stadium.

Wesleyan won game one by a 10-2 score and then rallied in the seventh inning for a 4-3 victory in game two.

In the first game, which lasted just five innings, O’Shields gave up two earned runs on five hits while striking out three and in game two, she went the distance and gave up three earned runs on eight hits and whiffed four.

She upped her record to 10-4 on the season.

In game one, Wesleyan made quick work of Frostburg State with a nine-run first inning sending 13 batters to the plate.

Frostburg State committed four errors in the inning as Wesleyan managed just five hits in the nine-run inning.

Kennedy Cowart had a one-run single, Lauryn King hit a one-run double, Kiley Turner hit a two-run double, and Grace Smith hit a single and a two-run double in the first inning.

Turner hit a solo home run in top of the second for the Lady ‘Cats making it a 10-0 game.

Taylor McCarty hit a two-run home run for Frostburg State in the bottom of the third inning as the Bobcats avoided the shutout, but the game was halted after five innings on the mercy rule.

Wesleyan collected 12 hits in the contest with Smith leading the way with three while Cowart, King, Turner and Grace Hightower each had two.

In game two, it was a scoreless contest until the bottom of the fifth when McCarty hit a one-run double to give Frostburg State a 1-0 lead.

Molly Osborne hit a one-run double for Wesleyan that scored Hightower in the top of the sixth, but Aliyah Ramsey hit a solo home run off of O’Shields in the bottom of the sixth inning treating Frostburg State to a 2-1 lead.

Wesleyan rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh.

Kelley Bourne hit a one-run single, Bella Posey smacked a one-run single, and Hightower hit a one-run double to account for the scoring.

That gave Wesleyan a 4-2 lead.

Sierra Sanderson singled home Kat Treff with one out in the bottom of the seventh but O’Shields left her stranded at first base as she forced Sam Carver to fly out to center field and McCarty to pop up to Cowart at first base to preserve the win.

Wesleyan smashed out 16 hits in the win as Turner and Hightower each had three.

Frostburg State dropped to 21-21 overall.

Wesleyan improved to 16-10.

The Lady Bobcats are scheduled to play Concord Friday in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and will wrap up the regular season Saturday at Glenville State.

First pitch of that doubleheader will be at 1 p.m.
