O’Shields continues to shine for Lady ‘Cats as they win three of four this past weekend

West Virginia Wesleyan pitcher Abagail O’Shields warms up between innings during game one of their doubleheader with West Virginia State on Sunday. Shields won both ends of the twin bill to up her record to 13-4.

GLENVILLE – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats took three of four games this weekend behind the arm of Abagail O’Shields.

Wesleyan split a pair of games with Glenville State on Saturday with O’Shields pitching the Lady ‘Cats to a 5-2 win in game one but they dropped game two by a 3-2 score.

On Sunday, O’Shields pitched the Lady ‘Cats to a pair of wins over the MEC South Division champs – West Virginia State.

The Lady ‘Cats took game one by a 3-0 score as O’Shields tossed another shutout and then won game two by a 7-1 margin as she threw a complete game-four hitter.

On Monday, due to a conflict with Wesleyan’s exam schedule, they didn’t play their regular-season doubleheader finale with Concord forfeiting the pair of games.

That left head coach Steve Warner’s team with a 19-13 record heading into Friday’s MEC Tournament opener with West Liberty.

In Saturday’s opener, Karra Smith hit a two-run home run off of O’Shields in the bottom of the first, but that would be the only runs they managed in game one.

Lauryn King hit a solo home run in the top of the second and Molly Osborne hit a one-run single in the top of the third to even the game at 2-2.

Kelley Bourne gave Wesleyan the lead with a one-run single to center in the top of the fourth and then hit a two-run sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth giving Wesleyan the 5-2 lead and the win.

Wesleyan managed just four hits in the win with King getting two.

O’Shields (11-4) gave up just three hits and struck out two in the win.

Game two saw the Lady ‘Cats get upset by Glenville State as the Pioneers kept Wesleyan off the board until the top of the seventh inning.

Osborne singled home Bourne and Shelby Kennedy with two outs making it a 3-2 game, but Brooke Clark hit into a fielder’s choice for the final out of the game.

Wesleyan had six hits with Grace Smith and Osborne getting two each.

Ciana Bowen (0-2) suffered the loss going the distance. She gave up three earned runs on seven hits.

O’Shields was in complete control in game one on Sunday limiting the Yellow Jackets to just four hits in the shutout win while striking out six and not walking a batter.

Wesleyan gave O’Shields all the offense she needed, and it was all the offense she got, with a three-run first inning.

Kennedy Cowart hit a one-run single, King hit a sacrifice fly that scored Smith and Kiley Turner hit a one-run single that brought home Cowart.

Wesleyan out hit West Virginia State by a 6-4 margin with Clark, Smith, Cowart, King, Turner and Bella Posey each getting one hit.

The second game was all Wesleyan as well as a five-run third inning allowed them to cruise to the victory.

Smith, Kennedy and Bourne each had a RBI in the inning for Wesleyan.

A solo home run by Emma Ruth in the top of the fourth was the lone offense for the Yellow Jackets.

Wesleyan added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a ground out RBI by Posey and a one-run single from Osborne.

Wesleyan had eight hits with Smith, King and Bourne getting two each.

O’Shields (13-4) gave up one earned run on four hits while fanning two.

Wesleyan will now make the trip to Salem (Va.) for the MEC Tournament.

They will play West Liberty Friday at 2:30 p.m. in their opening contest.
