No. 1 Wheeling Park too much for Lady Bucs in 60-25 setback

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs knew they would have their hands full with No. 1 Wheeling Park coming to town Friday night for a non-conference contest.

Another slow start, a reoccurring theme for the Lady Bucs this season, hampered any upset bid the Lady Bucs were pining for as they dropped a 60-25 decision.

The Lady Bucs were held scoreless in the first quarter as they trailed by a 13-0 margin after eight minutes of action.

The Lady Bucs were 0-for-10 in the first quarter. Wheeling Park was exactly lighting it up either shooting just 25 percent in the first quarter (4-for-16) but did hit two three pointers.

The second quarter was a competitive battle as Wheeling Park won it by an 11-9 score.

McKenzie Reynolds put in a lay-in to finally get the Lady Bucs on the board at the 6:32 mark of the second quarter as they trailed by a 15-2 margin.

Kendall Currence followed that with a lay-up as the Lady Bucs trailed by just 11, at 15-4.

Wheeling Park extended their lead to 21-4, but Currence put in a lay-up and Reynolds knocked down two free throws to close it to 21-8.

The Lady Bucs were down by a 24-9 score at the break.

Wheeling Park started the second half on a 14-0 run aided by four three-pointers, three by Lindsey Garrison and one by Shanley Woods.

Currence ended the run with a put back but Wheeling Park scored the next five points for a 48-11 advantage.

Shelby McDaniels went inside the paint for a lay-up, and after a basket by Wheeling Park’s Jailah Walker, Kassidy Wilfong made two free throws making it a 45-15 contest.

Garrison hit another three for Wheeling Park to end the quarter making it a 48-15 contest.

Wheeling Park scored the first six points of the fourth quarter extending their lead to 55-15.

Buckhannon-Upshur ended the game outscoring Wheeling Park by a 10-5 margin, getting eight of those points at the free throw line.

Reynolds led the Lady Bucs with eight points and seven rebounds.

McDaniels tacked on seven poitns and three steals.

Bella Abernahty paced Wheeling Park with 18 points while Shanely Woods contributed 14

Wheeling Park improved to 19-3 on the season.

The Lady Bucs dropped to 13-8 on the season.

They will wrap up their regular season on Monday traveling to Parkersburg South.

The non-conference outing will start at 7:30 p.m.
